However, following discussions with United manager Ruben Amorim, he decided to stay and the Red Devils have so far improved on last season, when they finished around 15 hours in the Premier League and lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.
United currently sit sixth in the Premier League after a dramatic 4-4 draw with Bournemouth on Monday.
However, they did not take part in any European competition, losing to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

Fernandes remains confident he can win more silver medals with the club and told former United defender Ferdinand that was the reason he decided to stay.
“I wouldn’t have stayed here if the club hadn’t told me that our aim was still to be the best, to win trophies and to return to my previous club.
“Because if that wasn’t the purpose, yeah, I wouldn’t be here.
“But I know that the purpose of the club is still to get back to where they want it to be and where I want the club to be. That’s why I came to the club in the first place. So if I can help get back there, that’s all I want to do.”
Fernandes revealed in another part of the interview that there was a time when he would leave the club, similar to last summer.
“When I came to the club, I think my loyalty, other than just loving being here and loving the club, was like the toughest times I had the club and I could have quit twice,” Fernandes said.
“The club said, ‘No, we need you.’ And I said, ‘Okay, you gave me something.’ I’ll give you something. ”
“Obviously, I don’t think my time at the club was what I wanted because obviously I wanted to lift trophies and I should have lifted trophies and I didn’t lift as many trophies as I could have.”

“But at the same time, I think everything that I’ve done for the club is still very important in a way and I don’t think it takes anything away from the other players that were here and everything.
“I think I stayed at the club when we were struggling the most. The chances I was given were very good and I hope everyone at the club recognizes that.”
“So I’m very aware that I could have taken a different path. I had trophies in my cabinet, so I could have taken a different path, probably won more trophies, and people could have talked about me in a different way.”
“So these days, when you win or lose a trophy, people talk about you as if you were a better player or a worse player.”
United’s next game is on Sunday against title challengers Aston Villa.
