Liverpool came close to signing Marc Göch for £35m in the summer transfer window, but the Reds will face competition from Bayern Munich in January.
Liverpool are on high alert after it was revealed that Bayern Munich have begun negotiations with Marc Gehi over a possible free transfer. Crystal Palace captain Guehi underwent a medical at Liverpool in September, after which his £35m contract was scrapped at the 11th hour.
The England international is currently in the final year of his contract and has revealed that he will not sign a new contract with Palace. This has attracted interest from a number of European powerhouse teams, including Bayern, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Liverpool remain interested but risk missing out on the former Chelsea prospect if they wait until the summer. According to Sky Germany, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl spoke to Guehi in January about plans to steal the match against Liverpool.
The 25-year-old enters the remaining six months of his contract, which will allow him to negotiate with overseas clubs and sign pre-contractual agreements. Regulations say Liverpool cannot do the same and will face the dilemma of whether to pay Guehi’s transfer fee or wait in January.
But by then, Guehi could already be heading to Bayern. Bayern star Harry Kane is said to be encouraging his England team-mate to move to Munich.

For Liverpool, there is one advantage to Bayern’s pursuit of Gehi. This suggests Vincent Kompany’s side have no plans to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck, who has been linked with the Reds as a replacement.
The 26-year-old Schlotterbeck is at an impasse over a new contract with Dortmund, and it is thought the Bundesliga giants will consider selling him if a deal cannot be reached. The German international is left-footed and offers Liverpool a change in a different element of their defence.
The Reds are eyeing a centre-back, with Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain. Although Real have cooled their interest, Konate’s poor performance this season has put Liverpool in a difficult position.

Like Guech, the Frenchman is set to become a free agent in June. Arne Slott hopes Konate can turn his form around in the second half of the season after helping Liverpool keep a clean sheet in Tuesday’s crucial 1-0 Champions League win away to Inter Milan.
“The most difficult thing for him and for me is that he played very well for most of the game, even in the games where we conceded goals,” Slott explained.
“Let’s take the PSV game. I think up until that moment he had played a very good game and it’s happened many times, so it’s not a surprise to me that he can play well, but I’m very happy that he kept a clean sheet and had no part in anything that happened tonight.”
“He also got very unlucky that if you make a mistake or get caught up in a mistake, this ball always comes in.”
