Ruben Amorim praised Mason Mount’s performance in Manchester United’s win over Wolves. The Red Devils, who were expected to dominate the match against the bottom of the Premier League, took advantage of Bruno Fernandes’ farcical defending to take the lead in the 25th minute.
However, Wolves managed to equalize by halftime with a goal from Jean-Richner Bellegarde, breaking a five-game goal drought. Despite taking the lead, they were unable to maintain their momentum in the second half. United took advantage of the space given to them in the final third and scored three more goals with penalties from Mount, Brian Mbeumo and Fernandes.
Asked about Mount’s consistent high-level performances, Amorim said: “I think it’s the way we play, but compared to his past at Chelsea, which is the same at Chelsea, he has great quality.”
Amorim went on to praise Mount’s versatility, saying: “He can defend, he can attack, he had really good quality when he touched the ball. So it’s not a surprise to me, but of course we have to look after him. Sometimes you have to protect them in match training, but when you build, the same thing will happen with Luke Shaw. So he’s going to build that and that’s going to be very important for our club.”
Regarding Mount’s leadership style, Amorim said: “He’s a different type of leader. Unlike, say, Richa (Lissandro Martinez). He’s a guy who leads by example, regardless of the situation.”
“Mason Mount is always doing the same thing, training, talking, dealing with people around Carrington. It’s not easy. That’s why he’s a very, very good player.”
Amorim also revealed why Mount does not start every game, adding: “There are also tactical issues. Sometimes he plays as a striker, sometimes[Mateus]Cunha goes to that position and sometimes we need to protect Mason Mount.”
Monday’s result moves United into sixth place in the Premier League, leaving the Red Devils just one point behind fourth-placed Crystal Palace.
The 13-time Premier League champions appear to have finally turned a corner under Amorim, losing just once in their last nine league games.
United aim to kick-off over the holiday period and welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford next Monday. Amorim’s men then travel to the West Midlands to face Aston Villa before boxing against Newcastle six days later.
Wolves will then visit Old Trafford on Tuesday, December 30th, while United will begin 2026 with a trip to Leeds on Sunday, January 4th.
