Liverpool bosses are reported to have given their full support to Arne Slott after star winger Mohamed Salah said at the weekend he would be “thrown under the bus” by the club. Salah made his thoughts known after being unable to take the field in Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds on Saturday night.
With Liverpool and Salah underperforming this season, the Reds already look well out of contention for the Premier League title. The Egyptian international played just five minutes in the team’s opening 12 league games, but remained on the bench for the entire game and was left out of the squad for the trip to West Ham late last month. He came on at half-time against Sunderland last Wednesday and played 45 minutes, but was again missed against Leeds as Slott kept him on the bench for the entire game. And Salah took aim at his club and manager immediately after the clash at Elland Road.
“I’m very disappointed. I’ve done a lot for this club,” Salah said. “Everyone has seen it in recent years, especially last season. I don’t know why I’m sitting on the bench.”
“I feel like the club is throwing me under the bus, that’s how I feel. I think it’s obvious that someone will blame me.
“The club promised me a lot in the summer, but I was on the bench for three games. I can’t say they kept their promises.”
“I’ve said many times that I have a good relationship with the coach, but all of a sudden we no longer have a relationship. I don’t know why.”
According to talkSPORT, Slott has the full backing of the Liverpool board over Salah’s abuse.
Liverpool’s leaders believe the Dutchman should have the freedom to make tactical decisions and that the players should respond to those decisions in a professional manner.
There is a big question as to whether Salah will travel to Italy ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League game against Inter Milan. And he may not feature in Saturday’s Premier League match against Brighton.
The 33-year-old is due to begin international duty to Egypt immediately following the Seagulls’ visit for the African Cup of Nations.
