England and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi’s contract expires at the end of this season, and he will be available on a free transfer after his move to Liverpool failed last summer.
Marc Gehi has insisted that “God has a plan for me” after his summer move to Liverpool fell through. And fellow Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix revealed that the south London club’s Christian players began praying together en route to their historic FA Cup win last season.
Guehi watched a £35m move to Anfield fall through on deadline day as the Eagles were unable to find a replacement.
The England centre-back’s contract expires at the end of this season and he has told the club he will not sign a new contract. Palace risk losing their captain for free unless they sell him in January, while a free transfer would see Europe’s top clubs lining up to sign him in the summer.

Asked about the failed move to Liverpool on Sky Sports News, the former Chelsea defender said: “I think everyone knows it was difficult. In fact, it wasn’t difficult. It wasn’t difficult at all, because if you focus on the most important thing, it becomes easier.”
“I know God has a plan for me, and whatever that plan is, it’s going to come true one day. But the goal and focus is always to play football and try to be the best I can, and I’m fortunate to be able to accomplish that with people like Max.”
Guehi is the son of a church pastor, and Lacroix is also a Christian who helps with pregame prayers.
“Yeah, yeah, we started last year,” LaCroix said. He signed from Wolfsburg in August 2024 to reunite with former manager Oliver Glanser. “So we say, there are a lot of Christians here, so why not put the game in the hands of God, in the hands of Jesus Christ?”
“So we said, ‘Okay, let’s give it a shot. And we start doing it. And it was complicated at first. But after a couple of games, we started to see results and I think we had an incredible season last year and everyone realized that we were in for a benefit. So we said, ‘Okay, let’s play for Jesus Christ.’ And this is what we’re going to do?”
“We believe in Jesus Christ, and it’s about exercising our faith. And as he said, it was hard at first, but thankfully we continue to do things like that. We continue to pray. We continue to have that kind of fellowship with each other, and results have come. And we continue to do things like that. And the results have come.”
“But it’s more than that. It’s just about being with my brothers and showing that faith and showing that I want to play for his glory.”
“And for all the glory and everything we do, whether things are going well or not, we’re still doing the same thing. So it’s important that we just keep doing what we’re doing.”
