Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes on Thursday delivered his verdict on Koby Mainu’s recent snub, with manager Ruben Amorim leaving him as an unused substitute.
Manager Paul Scholes has hit out at Ruben Amorim’s lack of game time for Manchester United this season, calling his treatment of Koby Mainu “bullish”.
Mainu, 20, has not started a single Premier League game for United in the 2025/26 season. He has played just 171 minutes in the top flight and was an unused substitute in Thursday’s drab 1-1 draw with West Ham at Old Trafford.
Amorim said last week that he considers Mainu a “starter” despite not having played from the opening whistle in a league game this season. The England international started in the Carabao Cup at Grimsby in August, which ended in a draw but defeat.
“I look at him as a starter like any other player,” Amorim said last Friday. “I just have to make a choice, and at the end of the day, it wasn’t Coby.

“I don’t know about the future. Again, I always think the same thing about Casemiro. (He) didn’t play, but then he will play. I just want to win games. I don’t care who is playing.”
Now, former United midfielder Scholes has taken to Instagram to air his frustrations with the Reds’ head coach after Amorim didn’t even use Maynou against West Ham.
“Bull***,” Scholes posted in response to Amorim’s comment. “This kid is ruined by not being allowed to play for a team that can’t control the game of football. I hate to see homegrown players leave, but this is probably the best thing for him right now. Enough is enough.”
Scholes later deleted a post about Maynou, who was scorned when Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorg, Lenny Yolo and Lisandro Martinez were brought on before United conceded late on against the Hammers on Thursday.
This result means United have only won one of their last five league games, leaving them languishing in 8th place. Despite defeating Crystal Palace on Sunday to end a three-game winless run, Amorim’s side were unable to follow up on their impressive success at Selhurst Park.
Against West Ham, United took the lead with Diogo Dalot’s goal in the 58th minute, but the Reds could not hold on until Sungtu Magassa equalized for the Hammers in the second half.
“Yes, I’m frustrated and angry,” Amorim said in a brief assessment of his mood after West Ham. “that’s it.”
As for Maynou, it is rumored that he will leave Old Trafford in January. Napoli remain interested in signing the talented young midfielder and are considering making a move towards a deal next month.
