Roy Keane criticized Manchester United’s substitutes, calling them “low quality” and suggested Mason Mount resembled a “schoolboy” when he came on from the bench against West Ham. The Red Devils once again disappointed their home supporters for the second time in 10 days as they were drawn away by the struggling Hammers, who remain in the bottom three. Although they took the lead, they were pulled away and had no choice but to accept a draw.
Amorim continued to make substitutions to try to capitalize on United’s advantage, but he was unable to make an impact on the game. Following Dalot’s opening goal, Amorim introduced a number of changes, including bringing on Mount and Manuel Ugarte for Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee. United fought back to beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, with Mount emerging as the winner, but the former Chelsea man was unable to replicate his impact, leaving Keane particularly frustrated.
“If you look at the team considering the money spent, we lack depth, especially in attack,” the Irishman told Sky Sports.
“When I was trying to watch the game, I remember when Mason Mount came on. Some players take a while to get up to speed, but he was like a school kid. You want players who can come in with presence. If anything, they brought United down a level, and it looked like that was the case tonight.”
The stalemate at Old Trafford means United have secured a win in just one of their last five top-flight games, but only one of those has ended in a loss. Keane expanded on his criticism, expressing concern about the team’s failure to cope with the difficult situation.
“The reason you play for Man United is to deal with situations like this,” he said. “You try to deal with a team in the bottom three and 10-man Everton with a one-point lead. If you can’t deal with that, how are you going to deal with a team above the table?”
Despite boos at the final whistle, United remain in eighth place, just two points off the top four. Their next game will be against unbeaten Wolves, who sit bottom of the division, but less than three points will be deemed unacceptable.
