Manchester United missed out on victory against West Ham on Thursday night thanks to a late goal from Sungtu Magassa. Former United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka shone for the Hammers, but the home side were frustrated for much of the game. And Red Devils star Aiden Haven, who replaced the injured Matthijs de Ligt in the heart of the backline, was suspended after eight minutes and sent off at the interval, ruining a big audition.
Diogo Dalot was picked out by Casemiro inside the penalty area and smashed the ball past Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola to give United the lead just before the hour mark. However, seven minutes before the end, Magassa smashed the ball into the goal after United missed a corner kick, and the hosts were unable to seal the victory. Express Sport has also rated and shortlisted United players.
Manchester United vs. West Ham player ratings (3-4-2-1)
Senne Ramens: 6
Since arriving in the summer, he has been consistent between the sticks and established himself as the team’s No.1. Didn’t have much to do and was unable to prevent Magassa’s efforts when called upon.
Nusser Mazraoui: 6
He will be an important player if he fits and is placed on the right side of the defence. They kept it simple in possession but could have tried to make more of an impact in the final third as the Red Devils looked to break down the visitors.
Aiden Heaven: 5
With Lenny Yolo on the bench, he replaced De Ligt as the center of the back three. He was dragged out of his position early on and was given a warning within the first 10 minutes. He struggled to deal with Callum Wilson, who was booked, and was replaced by Yoro at half-time.
Luke Shaw: 8
He showed quality on the ball and made a decent block early on to produce another strong performance. He has saved his teammates many times and is an invaluable asset to the team when he is fully fit. United had a chance to take the lead just before the end of the opening period, but their shot went wide.
Amado: 5
Immediately after kick-off, United moved quickly and delivered a decent cross for Joshua Zirkzee. I thought they should have given the penalty a little later. It was dangerous at times, but it was also inconsistent and could not always be relied upon to produce a product.
Casemiro: 5
He made some important blocks early in the game as West Ham gained the upper hand. However, his pace was inconsistent at times and he lacked authority. Koby Mainu will believe he can do a better job in the middle of the pitch.
Bruno Fernandes: 7
He created many chances for his teammates and was eager to get involved in the team’s attacking play. In the first half, he was unable to finish off the fine moves he made with Paolo Di Canio’s scissor kicks. As the match wore on, the boil subsided and he looked tired.
Diogo Dalot: 6
He appears to be one of Ruben Amorim’s favorites and once again started on the left wing. Against Wan-Bissaka, we didn’t have a great first half, but we kept pushing and scored the first goal of the night. It was removed immediately after that.
Brian Mbeumo: 6
His socks came off and he was in a dangerous situation from start to finish, but no final results were achieved. Midway through the first half, he took a powerful shot towards goal, but the shot was tipped over by Arreola. It wasn’t his best match, as he failed to score in three consecutive games.
Matheus Cunha: 5
He returned to the United squad after an injury layoff but looked rusty. He tried to get involved in his team’s attacking play, but lost the battle to Wan-Bissaka as the Englishman put in a world-class performance. He will need to increase his speed to maintain his place on the wing.
Joshua Zirkzee: 7
His goal against Crystal Palace at the weekend paid off as he maintained his place up front despite struggling for much of the game at Selhurst Park. He sent a header wide of the target late in the opening period, and after the break he drew Mbeumo out with a great pass. He looked much brighter than he did on Sunday, but he can still contribute more in front of goal.
replacement
Yoro Lenny: 7
He was sent off for giving away a penalty against Crystal Palace, but came on as a substitute for Aiden Haven and immediately strengthened the defense.
Patrick Dorg: 5
He replaced leading goalscorer Dalot with just over 20 minutes remaining, but was unable to do enough at either end of the pitch.
Manuel Ugarte: 6
He did not play many games under Amorim, but was asked to come on in the second half as Matheus Cunha came on as a substitute.
Mason Mount: 6
It’s a shame that he wasn’t able to start because he had to endure a 12-minute timeout. Wan-Bissaka immediately clicked on him when he appeared.
Lisandro Martinez: 6
He appeared towards the end, replacing Luke Shaw.
