Cristian Romero was the hero for Spurs against Newcastle, scoring twice, but the Argentine defender’s strike was arguably more eye-catching than the others.
Tottenham star Cristian Romero has hinted that his late wonder strike against Newcastle was almost Lionel Messi-like. The Argentina defender scored twice as the North London side battled for a point at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
His second attack was certainly one to remember in the 95th minute, when his overhead kick went through several bodies and into the net. And Romero has since emphasized how important that is given the Spurs’ recent form.
He said, “The first goal was very important. The team hasn’t been good enough in the last three or four games. We’ve been going through difficult times, but I like their mentality, especially in this game.”
Romero suggested the goal was potentially worthy of compatriot Messi. He said, “I watch him play every day with Leo Messi in the national team, and it was a beautiful goal.”

Romero, 27, has scored three goals in 15 appearances for Spurs this season, but only found the back of the net once last season. Spurs manager Thomas Frank said of the defender’s performance: “Perfect bicycle kick to the shin and into the bottom corner.
“I’m going to start praising Kuti. I think he deserves all the praise for his best performance, defending, on the ball, calm, composure, dueling. And then he got up there and scored two goals.”
“The bicycle kick probably gets a little more praise, but I think the header is even better. The way he does it is better than a lot of strikers.

“That being said, I think I really liked the character of this team, the mentality of this team, what they showed after three tough games. To go here, fourth game in 10 days, third away game, in a very difficult place, losing twice, falling behind twice, and coming back shows everything about the drive and mentality of this team.”
Tuesday night’s draw leaves Tottenham 11th in the Premier League, without a win in their last five league games. Thomas Frank’s side are scheduled to return to action this weekend when they host London rivals Brentford.
Newcastle currently sit 13th in the table and are set to face Burnley at St James’ Park this weekend. Eddie Howe’s side will then turn their attention to Champions League action, with a trip to German side Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for next week.
