Bruno Guimarães almost got into a fistfight after scoring an injury-time equalizer against Newcastle when full-timer Cristian Romero appeared to emulate his rival’s celebration.
Bruno Guimarães had to sit out against Cristian Romero as his late goal gave Tottenham a point against Newcastle.
The Argentine scored two equalizers for the North Londoners, but appeared to anger the Magpies midfielder by mimicking his celebrations. Romero’s header canceled out Guimarães’ shot and gave them the first goal of the night. Anthony Gordon converted a penalty in the 86th minute and a Tottenham defender converted an overhead kick in stoppage time.
He seemed to be imitating Guimarães’ ear-rubbing and pointing to the name on the back of his shirt. And at full-time, both players had to be separated by their teammates as tensions rose.
Guimarães’ frustration is no doubt due to another missed opportunity as Newcastle remain bottom of the table with a draw and the season is not yet in full swing.
Newcastle have let go of four leads this season, with some games ending in defeat and others splitting points. Had they held on to victory on all these occasions they would have gone top of the Premier League, but Howe would have had new problems to deal with.

“It’s really weird,” he said. “Sometimes these things happen in cycles and can be resolved well, like our away games. This is another one. Historically, we have been good at spotting the game, getting through tough situations and managing the game. We have to find that again quickly because we lose important points.”
Tottenham desperately needed a late point after losing to Fulham on Saturday. The home crowd booed the team as they lost again on their own patch, but their struggles away particularly pleased the under-pressure Thomas Frank.
“I really liked the character and mentality they showed as a team after three tough games,” he said. “It’s our fourth away game and third away game in the last 10 days. It’s a very difficult place to come back after losing twice. It shows everything about the team’s drive and mentality.”
The defeat would have left a bitter taste in his mouth as Frank spoke out about the issue with the penalty being awarded in the 86th minute following VAR intervention.
“It was a complete mistake by VAR,” the Spurs manager said. “The referee made a good decision and I encouraged his decision on the pitch. For me, it’s not a penalty at all.”
