This week presents a somewhat unusual scenario for Manchester United. Manchester United face a quick transition between midweek games for the first time since late August. A humiliating defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup further eased an already congested schedule for a side not involved in European competition this year, allowing United to delve deeper into Ruben Amorim’s strategy at the Carrington training ground.
The Red Devils have played just 14 games this season, compared to 20 for rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle. There was just a four-day gap between Sunday’s victory over Crystal Palace and Thursday’s game against West Ham at Old Trafford, which is unusual for a side accustomed to long preparation periods. Since early September, he has spent at least six days preparing for each match.
Despite the tougher schedule, the fixture list remains in United’s favor, with six games scheduled for December. While their rivals are busy with a packed calendar of midweek fixtures, United are still enjoying plenty of recovery time.
City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle are likely to play twice a week into the new year as they will also be competing in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on top of their European duties.
Manchester United’s schedule could have been even tougher. Live television meant they were given an extra day of rest in lieu of midweek games, with games against Crystal Palace on Sunday and Wolves on Monday night.
Following Monday night’s game against Molineux, the Red Devils will enjoy a week’s rest before hosting Bournemouth at Old Trafford. There will be a six-day gap until the game against Aston Villa at Villa Park before Christmas.
The festivities will continue with a five-day break until the Boxing Day game against Newcastle, followed by a four-day break before they face Wolves again. Both games will be home games for United.
The new year begins with a short trip across the Pennines to face Leeds in five days until 2026. While many Premier League teams face an even more exhausting December, United’s itinerary looks relatively manageable. Only two of the six games will be away, with Wolves 125 miles away and Villa 85 miles away.
However, this month is not without its challenges for United. They are one of the clubs most affected by the AFCON call-up, as they will lose Nousser Mazraoui, Amad and Brian Mbeumo for the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts in mid-December.
Still, Ruben Amorim’s side should view the coming weeks as a golden opportunity. With their rivals juggling European contracts and Carabao Cup qualification, United can afford to put up a solid stand.
They will also be heading into this section with solid momentum. The surprise loss to Everton was their only defeat in their last seven games and with fixtures against two of the bottom four teams on the horizon, they will be hoping to extend their losing streak.
They start the month seventh in the Premier League table, just three points behind third-placed Chelsea. United must seize the opportunity this festive period presents in order to start 2026 as strong contenders to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
