“It’s great for him!” – Guardiola delighted that Haaland has qualified for the World Cup with Norway

Manager Erling Haaland said people should be “criticized” if they don’t top the charts after scoring his 100th Premier League goal in record time in Manchester City’s 5-4 win over Fulham.

In what was a historic game, Haaland hit the post early on to put City ahead, before the England midfielder scored a superb third goal before assisting Tijani Lijnders for City’s second and Phil Foden for their fourth.

Emile Smith Rowe’s header before the break made it 3-1 at half-time, then Foden and Sander Berge’s own goals made it 5-1, but Fulham, buoyed by the substitution of Samuel Chukwueze, finished off a tense game with three goals from Nigerian Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi.

In the end, City were able to hang on, closing the gap on leaders Arsenal to just two points in the run-up to Wednesday’s game against Brentford, ensuring Haaland was the only talk after the game.

The Norwegian forward has now reached 100 Premier League goals in 111 games, breaking Alan Shearer’s record of 124 games, set exactly 30 years ago on 30 December 1995.

For Haaland, it is not a given that he will become the first player to score a century in the Premier League, but he insisted that as City’s striker he should put up big numbers.

He told Sky Sports: “This (record) is huge and I’m really proud of it and of course it’s a huge thing. It’s great to be in the 100 club and I’m happy.”

“I knew that, so I tried to do that. I tried to help the team score, and that’s my job.”

“Each game is different and you can’t think about the previous games. We need to focus on what’s ahead. In fact, we lost against Newcastle and Leverkusen, but now we’ve won two in a row so we need to keep moving forward.”

“I hate to say it, but when you’re a Man City striker, you have to perform well and that’s my job. If I don’t, people should criticize me. That’s what people do, so in the end I have to deliver.”

Haaland becomes the 35th player to reach 100 goals in the Premier League, while Matt Le Tissier has also reached 100 and will aim even higher with his next goal.

He still has a long way to go to overtake Mohamed Salah and become the top foreign player with 190 points, with Alan Shearer’s 260 points still the benchmark.

Manager Josep Guardiola hopes he remains as hungry as ever and ready to score more goals, but the City manager joked about his players not respecting him when the game looked like City were taking the lead.

Speaking on Match of the Day, he said: “It was unbelievable, impressive. He was outstanding. He was unbelievable today. He scored a great goal.”

“I hope he continues at this club and is hungry to score more goals.

“I’m older and the players don’t respect me! They don’t need to treat the manager like that.

“That only happens in this league. We played a great game…Listen, there were some really positive things about what we’ve done. Coming here and scoring five goals, and the way we played in the first half.”

“At the end of the day, it was a matter of character, resiliency and defense. They did what they had to do.”
