Steve Bruce, who tragically lost his grandson in October last year, has welcomed the arrival of his new grandson. The veteran manager and the entire Blues family were devastated by the sudden death of baby Madison, who tragically passed away at just four months old.
Now Steve’s daughter Amy has given birth to a son named Beau with her husband, former Fulham and Leeds striker Matt Smith. The couple also has a son named Lennon. Amy’s brother Alex, 41, who previously played for clubs such as Birmingham City FC and Hull and is currently a first-team coach at Salford City, announced the news on Instagram with the message: “Welcome to the world my new little nephew Bo xx.”
Steve admitted earlier this year that he was considering ending his football career while dealing with a family tragedy. After Maddison’s death, he and Alex temporarily stepped away from their respective club duties.
Steve eventually returned to manage Blackpool, but was sacked in October.
He told The Athletic: “There were times when I thought about not going back. I think people completely understood, but sometimes football gave me a little bit of an escape from everything.”
“This is the tragedy of all tragedies. I think everyone is going through similar grief. It’s horrible that a young, healthy boy doesn’t wake up one morning. We can never accept that. It hurts. Was it sidetracked from the grief? Maybe it is. The people here where I work have been great, and I didn’t want to let them down. They told me, ‘Slow down.’ Whether it was a month or five weeks, I was away. ”
After Madison’s death, a woman in her 40s who had been employed as a nanny was detained on suspicion of child neglect. However, investigators later determined it was an accident and the case was closed.
Greater Manchester Police said: “While the circumstances are tragic, we do not believe this death was criminally related.”
Steve continues to stress that “there hasn’t been a day that hasn’t affected me yet.” He added: “If anyone is going through the same kind of grief, my thoughts go out to them. It’s horrible that a young, healthy boy doesn’t wake up one morning.
“We’ll never be able to accept that. It’s painful. I think everyone is going through similar grief. It’s horrible not to wake up one morning with a young, healthy boy who is strong. We’ll never be able to accept that. It’s painful.”
