Former Tottenham striker Troy Parrott has been brilliant for his current club AZ this season, but he had a forgettable moment at the weekend as the Dutch team lost.
Irish striker Troy Parrott is said to have “not been up to his full potential” against AZ Alkmaar, where he was given a disastrous penalty at the weekend. The former Tottenham player has been sensational for the Dutch side since joining on a permanent basis last season.
He has scored 34 goals in 63 games for AZ, 14 of which have come this season. And Parrott looked set to add to his high-profile goal tally when they face Eredivisie rivals FC Twente at the weekend.
AZ, trailing 1-0, was awarded a penalty in the 99th minute, and Parrott was substituted. However, he attempted a daring panenka, which flew high over the bar.
Embarrassed, the 23-year-old turned away and lifted his shirt over his face, while his AZ teammates looked confused. Afterwards, many of Twente’s players gathered around the young striker to celebrate.
AZ coach Maarten Martens said of Parrott’s penalty after full time, “We didn’t finish well.” “If he can take a chip shot there and score, he’ll be doing well.

“Troy took responsibility. He gave it his all today, but we didn’t have a good result. He already takes that responsibility to the rest of the team.”
“He took responsibility for the goals conceded, which is natural. He knows he can do more than this. It wasn’t enough today. He’s still a striker, he’s still creative. We’ll definitely talk about that.”
AZ midfielder Per Koopmeiners added: “In the end he apologized. From now on it’s up to us to take some responsibility for it.”
Parrott’s disastrous penalty came amidst great results for both club and country. He has already enjoyed some high-profile performances for AZ, scoring a stunning hat-trick against the Republic of Ireland and Hungary in the recent international break to book his country a place in next summer’s World Cup play-offs.

Speaking about his fitness earlier this week, Parrott said: “Yes, playing with a smile is the most important thing for me. I’m really enjoying my football. I’m sharp, I’m fit, I’m feeling good. It’s an exciting time.”
He added: “I think it really suits me. The club has been great, they’ve brought me here, they’ve welcomed me and the fans have welcomed me as well.”
“Everyone here, including the staff, is working hard every day to make me better. Like I said, this has given me a little bit of a chance to be in the spotlight and enjoy my soccer and play with a smile on my face.”
“And I think the most important thing for a footballer is to enjoy it when you’re on the pitch, so you get the best from yourself as well. Look, I’m really happy here and I’m having fun.”
