West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta spoke out on social media platform X after receiving a red card in Sunday afternoon’s Premier League match against Liverpool.
West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta has broken his silence on social media after being sent off in Sunday afternoon’s Premier League game against Liverpool, revealing he could face a further suspension as a result of his abusive behavior.
The Hammers have been on a roll since Nuno Espirito Santo replaced Graham Potter at the end of September. His side were unbeaten in their last three games, including wins against Burnley and Newcastle and a draw against Bournemouth.
The visiting side were in frighteningly good form heading into the showdown at the London Stadium, and despite losing nine of their previous 12 games in all competitions, it was a big step in the right direction for Arne Slott’s side. After a scoreless first half, Alexander Isak, who joined Anfield from Newcastle on deadline day, put the Reds ahead with his first Premier League goal.

It was then that disaster struck for West Ham. Despite showing some positive signs after falling behind, Paqueta’s red card put a damper on the team’s sails, with Kodi Gakpo scoring Liverpool’s second goal in stoppage time.
The Brazilian had just returned to West Ham’s squad after serving a one-match ban following five yellow cards this season. With just over 10 minutes remaining, he was furious after being given a foul on teammate Niklas Furkruk.
Paqueta took his frustrations out on on-field referee Darren England, despite attempts by his teammates and even Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson to stop him.
However, he was restless and was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent as a result. He sarcastically applauded as he left the pitch.
The attacking midfielder faced criticism on social media after the incident, given how unnecessary the sending off was. This was not a kind criticism for him either, as he released a statement on social media platform X after the match.
“It is ridiculous to have my life and career affected for two years without psychological support from the federation,” Paqueta wrote. “Maybe this stupid behavior is just a reflection of everything I’ve had to endure and continue to endure. I’m sorry if it’s not perfect.”
The 28-year-old is of course referring to the FA’s two-year investigation into spot match-fixing allegations. He was cleared by the Independent Regulatory Commission in July, avoiding a permanent ban in the process.
Paqueta will miss West Ham’s midweek game against Manchester United at Old Trafford as a result of the red card. Considering he picked up two yellow cards, he should be selected again for next weekend’s away game against Brighton.
