West Ham United have announced that club legend Billy Bonds MBE has died at the age of 79. The club released a statement from his family on Saturday morning, describing him as a “legendary player, coach and manager” and “one of the greatest competitors English football has ever seen” and saying they were “deeply saddened and with the heaviest hearts”.
In a statement, the family said: “We are heartbroken today to announce the loss of our beloved father. He was the kindest, most loyal, selfless and loving man, devoted to his family. He loved West Ham United and its wonderful supporters with all his heart and cherished every moment he spent at the club. He will always be in our hearts and will be forever missed. We are comforted by the knowledge that his legacy will live on forever.”
West Ham confirmed: “Billy passed away peacefully on Sunday morning.” It added: “We would like to extend our thoughts and sincere condolences to everyone at West Ham United and ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this sad and difficult time as they come to terms with the passing of Claire, Katie, Eloise and Elissa.”
A period of thanks will also be held in his honor before the Premier League match against Liverpool starts at 2:05pm at the London Stadium. The club have confirmed that a full tribute will be paid at today’s next home match against Aston Villa on December 14th.
They say further tributes will follow from West Ham over the coming days. The statement concluded: “Rest in peace our brave, inspirational and lion-hearted leader Billy.” Bonds, who also played for Charlton Athletic, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Billy Bonds (MBE).
