Chelsea 1-1 Arsenal: The Blues threatened to be upset with 10 men when they took the lead in the second half, but Mikel Merino helped the Gunners finish with a point at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal fought back to take a point back from Chelsea with Mikel Merino’s header and took control of the Premier League title race.
The Gunners had Manchester City close in on them, but they stopped Chelsea from gaining further momentum after the home side took a surprise lead in west London, securing five points and finishing the weekend top of the table.
The Blues’ task was not made easier by Moises Caicedo’s first-half sending off, but they battled with 10 men to take the lead against their London rivals. Trevor Chalobah, who was once dumped by the club, returned and thrilled Stamford Bridge by heading home from a corner kick.
Chelsea’s lack of players meant Arsenal always had the upper hand, and in the end they aimed for parity and achieved it. Bukayo Saka beat Marc Cucurella and Mikel Merino crossed for the equalizer from close range.
Chelsea went into this battle off the back of defeating Barcelona in the Champions League, knowing that a win would move them within three points of their London rivals. However, once the match was level, the points looked like a good result as their chances were mostly limited.

Mikel Arteta has made the changes that have allowed him to be where he is today, with his well-stocked bench allowing the likes of Victor Gökeres, Martin Odegaard and Noni Madues to compete. They were unable to find a decisive goal as the status quo in the top flight was largely maintained.
Here’s a report from a fun afternoon in the capital, where Chelsea kept their share of the spoils.
Another missed opportunity?
Arsenal could sit in top spot and for much of the season they looked imperious. However, they and Arteta were fined for their failures against Liverpool and Man City. They were the better team at Anfield, but in the end they lost without gaining anything. Despite falling behind early on against City, Arsenal dominated the match, but only managed to score another point in stoppage time.
Against Chelsea, things were certainly even – that is, until one of the Blues went down. Were the visitors obligated to use their killer instincts and win the game? Some may say so, but Arsenal failed to produce results. They were on the back foot and had to show something to get back into the game, but they still had half an hour left before they finally found the winner, but still failed to show the ruthless edge they needed.
Chelsea’s title ambitions
It’s Liverpool, then Arsenal and sitting behind them is Man City. But now it could be Chelsea. Few thought of giving them a title charge, but they quietly went about their business. Last term, the Blues had some catching up until Christmas, but lost momentum. They’ve been in good shape for about a year now and may feel like they should be taken more seriously.
To their credit, they didn’t let the red card stop them and had a real ambition to play when they had the chance. If they had closed the gap their stock price would have gone up even more, but in the circumstances a point is well worth it and they could have a say in May.
blues bomb squad
This is a phrase used in the football world to describe a group of players who do not meet the requirements, often training away from the first team. Once upon a time, Chalova was in that team, but it looked as if his future at Chelsea was all but over.
Ironically, bomb squad is a phrase also used in rugby to describe the South African substitutes who frequently appear to destroy teams and win games in the process. Chalobah could help change perceptions among members of the bomb squad as the resurgence of magic at Stamford Bridge continues.
Caicedo, oh no.
He has been sensational this season and much of the talk leading up to this fixture has been about how Arsenal once missed out on Caicedo and how he ended up in blue. There was some debate as to whether Declan Rice or Caicedo had more influence, but in the end the Chelsea player was given less than 40 minutes.
Caicedo caught the Spaniard high in the studs and flew into Merino. It looked terrible at full speed but required VAR intervention before referee Anthony Taylor deemed it deserved a red card. This sending off completely changed the course of the match and the Ecuadorian player regretted his mistake.
Setting early markers
Discipline didn’t seem to be the focus at Stamford Bridge, with both teams keen to make sure the other knew they were there. After 13 minutes, the referee had already shown three cards. This was the earliest such number of cards had been presented in the Premier League throughout 2025.
It was the first time since against Manchester United in September 2006 that Arsenal had received more than one yellow card in the first 15 minutes of a Premier League match, with both Zvimendi and Mosquera on the record, with the latter certainly leaving little margin for error. Arsenal have received three cards within the first 30 minutes of a Premier League match for the first time on record.
Caicedo’s red card was the tip of the iceberg, but it was hardly a surprise in the first half of a war of attrition.
James: The Ultimate Swiss Army Knife
He’s a really great soccer player. How much better would he have been if he had spent more time on the field than on the treatment table these past few years? He usually plays at right-back and sometimes wing-back, but on Sunday he was used as a central midfielder and still had a huge impact.
James dropped deep to pick up the ball and slipped into center half, helping to start Chelsea’s attack. The English player is such a confident dribbler that he had no trouble penetrating into the center of the pitch, causing problems for Arsenal’s backline and forcing Calafiori to foul and book him. All afternoon he was a top-notch performer, and the Blues are much better dressed with him wearing it.
