Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is one of Manchester United’s top targets, but he is reportedly set to refuse a summer move if the Red Devils fail to secure a place in Europe. The former Blackburn Rovers midfielder has been selected by United ahead of the 2026/27 season. Ruben Amorim believes the midfielder’s qualities make him a perfect match for the team he aims to assemble at Old Trafford.
According to the Mirror, United are optimistic about signing Wharton next summer in a deal worth £70m. But despite his desire to return to the north-west of England, he is unlikely to leave Palace to join a team that cannot offer European football. Wharton feels ready to make the leap to bigger clubs, performing regularly on the grandest of stages.
United have not taken part in Europe this season following a disastrous previous campaign. After a string of inconsistent results, they are scheduled to face Palace at lunchtime on Sunday.
The Red Devils are also eyeing the likes of Elliott Anderson and Conor Gallagher, but Wharton remains their first choice.
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomez has been linked with a January move. However, United officials have distanced themselves from the club and the Brazil international.
Wolves have no interest in selling in January as they are yet to win the league this season and are fighting for survival at the bottom of the table.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish recently expressed hope that Wharton has rejected a move to United and is prepared to remain at Selhurst Park next season.
“Look, Adam will want to play with us in the Champions League one day and if that happens, or maybe he’ll want to play for another club,” he said.
“He’s an extraordinary talent. I think so at the moment and I can’t speak for Adam, but I think he’s focused on his time at Crystal Palace.”
“Last season he had an interrupted season with a groin problem that many young players suffer from.
“This season he’s completely focused on playing games, getting into the England squad and becoming a regular for us. I think he’s very committed to the club.”
“So it wouldn’t be surprising if Manchester United wanted Adam Wharton. The fact is he has a long contract left.”
“There’s no pressure on us to do that, and I don’t think there’s any real pressure from the players either.”
