Liverpool’s dismal run of results continued on Wednesday night, with pressure mounting on Arne Slott as the club’s leaders decide on potential replacements in both the long and short term.
Liverpool’s owner has identified Luis Enrique as his top managerial target if he chooses to move on from manager Arne Slott.
The Dutchman is under huge pressure after losing nine of his last 12 games for the club. Slott achieved Premier League glory last season during his first spell in charge, but has found things much more difficult with increased pressure in his second season.
Slott insists he still has the backing of the American owners, but insists they are preparing for the worst and that the PSG manager is the person they want to fill the high-profile spot in the long term. The Spaniard produced incredible performances in Paris, leading the French club to their first-ever Champions League success last season.
It was part of a treble-winning season and was Enrique’s second time achieving the feat. He achieved similar results in 2015 when he was manager of Barcelona, winning the Champions League treble.
Incredibly, if Liverpool sack Slott, they could look to Jurgen Klopp for the managerial job in the short term. The German, who is currently Red Bull’s global head of football, is likely to be asked to take over only until the end of the season, as Enrique is unlikely to step down midway through his term.

Slott insists he has been in dialogue with the club’s leadership throughout the nightmarish result, which has undoubtedly reached new depths this week. Things got worse on Saturday when they lost 3-0 to Nottingham Forest at Anfield, and on Wednesday they suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at home to PSV in the Champions League.
The Sun claims there are also conversations among Liverpool bosses that are fueling concerns about him losing his dressing room. Slots spent a staggering £426 million on player signings in the summer, but were unable to find a winning formula in signing eleven players.
The Liverpool manager accepts that talk will turn to him and his future given the results announced, but is confident that senior management believe he can turn things around. His future could depend on the club’s upcoming games against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds.
The Dutchman said: “It would be nice if we could come back and win, but if you’re working as a coach and your results aren’t improving, it’s normal to be questioned. When you lose a lot of times, people start talking about it. I have a lot of support from above. I don’t have any problems with my position. They don’t call me every minute of the day and say they trust me, but I feel their trust in me in normal conversations.”
