Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has already praised Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique amid rumors of a potential move to Anfield. Arne Slott currently holds the reins at Liverpool, but his future is the subject of intense speculation.
Consecutive defeats to Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven after the international break have put pressure on Slot’s position in the hot seat at Anfield. The Reds have lost six of their last seven Premier League games and nine of their last 12 in all competitions, losing each of their last three by three points.
Slott’s future is up in the air, but Liverpool’s leaders appear to be backing their Premier League title-winning manager for now. Despite this, rumors persist that a replacement candidate is being considered.
The Sun has reported that Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has put his name forward as a candidate to become Liverpool’s next manager. Enrique led PSG to Champions League glory last season, with the French giants defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final.
PSG lost Liverpool in the last 16 on their way to lifting the trophy last season. Gerrard, who was a commentator during last season’s Champions League final, explained why Enrique should be considered one of the world’s top managers, the Mirror reported.
“Does Luis Enrique deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho or Josep Guardiola? The answer is yes,” Gerrard said during TNT Sports’ coverage of the Champions League final in May.
“This team that he’s built and put together over the last year or two can beat you no matter what. The talent across this team, this is a special group of players and they’re coached by special people.”
With Sunday’s Premier League game against West Ham looming, Liverpool’s decision regarding Slott’s future remains uncertain. After the Reds lost to PSV in the Champions League, Slott was asked about his future and admitted he was not surprised by the speculation given the club’s recent results.
“For everyone, for the players and for me, this is very, very unexpected and shocking,” Slott said earlier this week. “I feel safe, but it’s okay.
“It would be great if we could come back and win, but if you’re working as a coach and things aren’t going well, it’s natural to have doubts.
“When coaches around the world lose a football match, let alone one that we lose, it’s normal for people to have an opinion about it. Whether that’s fair or unfair is for other people to decide. Is that normal? I think so. When you lose too many times, people start talking about it.
“I have a lot of support from upper management. I’m fine with my position. They (the board) don’t call me every minute of the day and say they trust me, but in the normal conversations we have, I feel trust.”
