Ruben Amorim was heavily backed in the summer transfer window with over £200m spent, but Manchester United bosses know there is still a limit to what his team can do.
Manchester United bosses admit Ruben Amorim’s squad remains limited despite confirming they will spend more than £200m on new players in the summer.
The Portuguese manager, who had the club’s worst ever Premier League record, brought in Benjamin Sesco for £74m, while also signing Matheus Cunha and Brian Mbeumo for more than £120m. Senne Ramens also joined the team and took the number 1 shirt for himself.
Despite the quality currently available to him, those at Old Trafford have tempered expectations by admitting there are limits to what Amorim can do with his team. Many positions still need to be strengthened before the head coach can expect regular production.
United lost to Everton on Monday, halting their momentum and ending their five-game unbeaten run. They are in 10th place after 12 games this season.
The January transfer window opens in just over five weeks, but despite needing to strengthen certain positions, United are looking to avoid the mid-season period and instead do business next summer, ESPN reports.

That said, they remain open-minded and will act if it is in their best interest. Injuries to key players may cause a change in stance, but finding valuable quality players is often difficult midway through the season when clubs tend to increase prices.
United believe their financial position allows them to continue investing in the squad despite spending heavily in the summer. They believe a number of their top earners, such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, will retire within the next six months and become more financially free. A return to Europe would also help their cause.
Adding a central midfielder is one of their priorities and will likely happen in the summer. Players with established Premier League credentials are already on the shortlist, including Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleva. They also evaluated Wolves duo Joao Gomez and Andre.
The club also believes Amorim needs more depth at wing-back, especially given his importance in the system. United primarily use traditional full-backs in these positions, with a number of potential targets being investigated at an early stage.
