Former Manchester United ace Timothy Fosu-Mensah is reported to be on the radar of Sheffield on Wednesday. The 27-year-old has not been with the club since parting ways with Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2024, and current Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is believed to have been involved in the decision to shorten his contract.
Fosu-Mensah spent five years at Old Trafford before joining the German side in a £1.8m deal during the January 2021 transfer window. Despite suffering serious knee and hamstring injuries that limited him to just 30 appearances in three and a half years, he was part of the team that won the historic Bundesliga title.
According to the Star, Fosu-Mensah is on the radar of Sheffield Wednesday despite not having played a game since April 2023. The team, which is struggling in the championship, is facing the risk of being relegated to League 1 after receiving a 12 point deduction.
But the Owls are doing everything they can to avoid dropping into England’s third tier next season, as their interest in players like Fosu-Mensah shows. One player who has stood out for Hillsborough this season is Harry Amass, who is on loan from United.
Fosu-Mensah received his first taste of senior football at United by Louis van Gaal on the same day that Marcus Rashford made his debut. He made 30 appearances for the first team, 11 of which came under manager Jose Mourinho.
The right-back has been full of praise for the Portuguese coach and previously revealed how much he has contributed to his development. He told The Sun in February 2024: “I spent a full season with the first team and as a result I was able to complete my first full pre-season with them.
“I was only a teenager when Jose Mourinho took over, but he helped me develop as a man football-wise. Jose was very demanding of his young players, but in a good way because he wanted them to be ready to represent a club of Manchester United’s size.”
Speaking about his decision to leave United, Fosu-Mensah said: “It was my decision. The manager was good to me, but in the end I didn’t play much. When you’re 22, 23, 24 years old, you have to play. I didn’t play much and I wanted to play.” In the end, the best decision was to go somewhere else where I had more time. ”
