PSV suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat in the Champions League, but Liverpool’s poor form continues, leaving Arne Slott at a loss.
Arne Slott admitted it was “excruciating” to see Liverpool lose again and that “nobody” expected them to lose 4-1 to PSV when they went into the break-all square.
The Reds shifted their focus to the Champions League and put an end to their domestic demise, winning three of four games, including a win over Real Madrid, but the Dutch side took advantage of Liverpool’s struggles.
They took the lead within six minutes with Ivan Perisic scoring in front of goal, and after the home side equalized, producing three goals in the second half, Slott looked for more answers. The Dutchman was looking to make a change by dropping Alexander Isak.
However, Wednesday’s turnaround came after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Merseyside. That means they have lost nine of their last 12 games since losing for the first time this year against Crystal Palace in September.
After seeing his team lose again, Slott told TNT Sports: “The emotions are very negative and disappointing. The way we conceded the goal, but we have to be positive about the reaction to losing 1-0 and up until half-time we were good. We had a chance to go 2-1, but no one expected us to be down 4-1 at half-time.”

Asked how to break the rut, he said: “The only way is to stick it out. We have to face the situation we’re in and fight really hard and it would be good if we don’t get hit by conceding goals every time.”
“The feeling that I, the players and probably the fans have is that we don’t expect it to be 1-1 after 45 minutes, we expect to win. It’s difficult, but the reaction was the reaction you would expect from a Liverpool player. But the end result is 4-1.”
PSV took the lead from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk clearly handled the ball. Slott claims the centre-half complained about the push when the corner was awarded, but admitted VAR would never be introduced to overturn the referee’s decision.
Liverpool have now conceded at least three goals in their last three games, an unpleasant statistic the club has not had to face since the 1950s. In the Premier League, the Reds currently find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League after a disastrous few weeks of results.
They have fallen to 13th place in Europe, and at this rate they will need to advance to the final tournament to remain in the top 16.
Slott deserves a lot of credit considering Liverpool won the title in their debut season. The Dutchman was allowed to spend more than £400m on new signings in the summer, but the Reds have endured a significant drop from last season’s level.
