Former Arsenal star Bacary Sagna has hinted at a big move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, suggesting he could be the perfect fit as Manchester United lack a traditional number nine. United have scored 19 goals in the Premier League, just five fewer than leaders Arsenal, yet Benjamin Sesco has only found the back of the net twice.
Despite recent wins against Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton, they have suffered setbacks, including draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, and a loss to Everton on Monday. Ruben Amorim’s side continue to struggle with inconsistency, while summer signing Sesco is still struggling to hit his stride following his £73m move from RB Leipzig. Sagna believes Mateta can solve his attacking problems.
“It would make sense for Jean-Philippe Mateta to go to Manchester United,” he told Oddspedia. “They don’t really have a number nine who is tall and can hold the ball and can get on the edge of crosses.
“It might be difficult for him to come into a club with a lot of new players and transfer his skills from Crystal Palace, but a move to Old Trafford would be good for him and for the club.”
Sagna added: “It will be difficult for Palace to keep him and if he wants the test of playing for one of the biggest teams in the Premier League, now is the perfect time to move.”
“He’s not a young player anymore and this could be one of the last moves of his career, so if the opportunity arises he’ll probably push for it.” Mateta has proven prolific at Crystal Palace in recent seasons and his extensive Premier League know-how could be invaluable at Old Trafford if a move materializes following summer interest.
The 28-year-old’s contract at Selhurst Park runs until the summer of 2027.
