Jamie Carragher reignited his feud with Mohamed Salah on Monday night, slamming the Liverpool star for his silence following the Reds’ current problems.
It’s been a testing few weeks for Liverpool and Mohamed Salah. The Premier League champions’ talisman looks like a shell of the player who led them to the title in Arne Slott’s first season.
He has scored in just two of the Reds’ last seven games, six of which ended in defeat. And with Liverpool currently in crisis territory, the Egyptian international was called upon by Kop favorite Jamie Carragher as pressure begins to mount on everyone at Anfield.
After Liverpool’s recent defeat, it was Virgil van Dijk who was back on the front lines. They suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest. But Carragher feels other players, not the Reds captain, should stick their heads over the parapet – with the Sky Sports pundit cruelly naming Salah.
Carragher’s comments are not the first time he has attacked Salah, including last year when he spoke about how the deal came about. And he even made some sarcastic comments to his agent…

agent’s anger
It was back in the summer of 2022 that Carragher lashed out at Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas Issa on social media amid speculation surrounding the player’s future.
There was talk at the time that Salah might not be offered the new contract that Liverpool fans were keen to offer him. And Abbas Issa’s post on X (formerly Twitter) was, in Carragher’s view, adding fuel to the fire.
Mr Carragher wrote to X: “All of us at the Reds love your client and if he is to leave next summer we will wish him well and express our great gratitude.” “But we can do without this incomprehensible crap for the next 12 months! @MoSalah, shout out!!”
Shortly after it was announced that Salah had signed a new three-year contract, Carragher quipped that Salah and his agent had “fooled everyone”.
salah bomb interview
Carragher was not happy with Salah’s explosive mixed-zone interview in which he revealed he had not been offered a new contract, two years after his skirmish with his agent.
“Of course there were discussions, yes, but there are clearly big differences in valuation at the moment, regardless of how Mo Salah and his agents assess themselves, whether it’s the money, the length of the contract or Liverpool’s commitment,” he said, accusing the star of being “selfish”.
“So the reason why Liverpool haven’t offered him a contract yet is because Mo Salah will turn it down. So they’re still negotiating. I’m really hoping they can meet in the middle.”
“But I have to say, I’m very disappointed with Mo Salah. That interview last night when the match was announced. Liverpool play Real Madrid in midweek and Manchester City at the weekend. That’s the story for Liverpool right now.”
Carragher’s rant ended with the critic again accusing his agent of making cryptic tweets, but Sarah responded with a dig of her own in a Sky interview soon after.
Salah appealed for ‘silence’
There will be no contract drama this time. Salah was rewarded for his impressive performances and was signed to a new contract at the end of last season, but he has had little impact this term.
He is not the only player currently struggling in a Liverpool squad that is going from bad to worse after a big-spending summer in the transfer market.
But Carragher questions why Van Dijk is currently the frontman and wants to hear more from Salah, who insists he will only speak if he wants to get “man of the match or a new contract”.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher said of Liverpool’s poor form: “We don’t know[what went wrong]. Nobody knows. The manager looks at the players every day and at the moment he can’t fix it completely. We’re talking about a manager who won the Premier League.”
“I have to say that after the game, Virgil van Dijk came out again and talked about what he should do as a captain and he upset Liverpool. I have to say that even when Liverpool lose this much, it’s always Van Dijk who comes out. And like I said, the captain should do that, but other players in the dressing room should also come out and speak on behalf of the club.”
“One year ago this weekend, Mo Salah shamelessly came out and talked about his situation, including how the club did not offer him a contract.
“The only time I listen to Salah is when he wins Man of the Match or when he needs a new contract. I would like to see Salah come out as one of the leaders, a Liverpool legend and speak for the team. He shouldn’t always be the captain.”
