Manchester United suffered a crushing defeat to 10-man Everton at Old Trafford, suffering their first Premier League defeat since September 27. The Red Devils were frustrated by a stubborn Toffees defense despite Idrissa Gana Guay receiving a bizarre red card in the 13th minute for slapping teammate Michael Keane in the face. Keenan Dewsbury-Hall put the Toffees ahead on the half-hour mark with a curling finish.
United desperately tried to make the most of their one-man advantage, but they failed miserably as their attack was weak with just six shots on target in 90 minutes. The defeat ends a five-game unbeaten run in the league and means Ruben Amorim’s side miss out on the chance to level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa. Manchester United player rating vs Everton
Senne Ramens – 5
His first doubtful moment in a United shirt came in the Dewsbury Hall goal, but he could have finished with more force. I could hear everything else, but that shot decided the game.
Yoro Lenny – 5
He made a decisive header clear from Iliman Ndiay’s cross early on, but was easily beaten down by Dewsbury Hall and denied a goal. In the second half of the attack, he came forward and put his body on the line, but most of his passes were horizontal.
Matthijs de Ligt – 6
He was a little late in bringing Dewsbury Hall closer to the goal, but was by no means the main player responsible. They looked shaky defensively overall, but they provided excellent balls to Mount and a great cross that led to a chance for Bruno Fernandes and a header from Joshua Zirkzee. They had a good chance in stoppage time, but their shot on goal was easily saved as it was leaning backwards.
Luke Shaw – 4
Left Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville was frustrated by their refusal to attack further in the second half. A very calm performance for a left back.
Nusar Mazraoui – 5
He was unable to trouble Everton’s battered backline and paid the price by being sent off at half-time. To be fair, there were some unfortunate casualties.
Casemiro – 5
His only contribution to the game before being sent off was a foul on Jack Grealish, who received a booking. Still, he wasn’t as bad as some of his teammates.
Bruno Fernandes – 5
I fell asleep defending Everton’s goal. He came close to equalizing on several occasions, including two long-range shots, one saved by Jordan Pickford and one that just missed, but he also made the strange decision to shoot with the outside of his right boot on one chance. If he had scored with his left, he might have had enough time to make it 1-1 and score the winning goal.
Patrick Dorg – 4
An unforgettable night for Danes. In the 33rd minute, they wasted a golden opportunity to make it 1-1 with a reckless shot, and overall their decision-making was sluggish. He came on as a substitute for Diogo Dalot, but his form is not looking good.
Brian Mbeumo – 5
He made some good saves in the second half, but other than that it wasn’t his best night. Everton dealt with him well. Still, he’s one of the few players I felt could force United into trouble. I made a reservation.
Amado Diallo – 6
He looked like one of the players most likely to make something happen at United, but at half-time he was moved into the right wing-back role by Ruben Amorim. He continued to be one of the home team’s best players after that, making some good passes and trying to push things, but without a decisive final product.
Joshua Zirkzee – 4
Their offensive power was too low for most of the game. Pickford had to stretch his 3/10 shot wide of the post, but was saved by a well-placed header from the bottom of the corner. Pickford forced a save with a header in the closing stages.
substitute
Mason Mount (Mazloaoui 46) – 6
He helped improve United’s attacking threat with several tries on goal. No one really bothered Pickford.
Coby Mainu (Casemiro 58) – 5
There was a huge cheer when he appeared, but I wasn’t too excited about the match.
Diogo Dalot (Dorg 58) – 5
He played as a left-sided wing-back. When chasing goals, isn’t a wing-back what you need?
