Manchester United 0-1 Everton: Ruben Amorim’s side suffered a heartbreaking defeat at home to the visitors, with Idrissa Gueye sent off for a collision with a team-mate.
Michael Keane was slapped by one of his team-mates, but Manchester United were left red-faced at Old Trafford.
On a remarkable night, Idrissa Gueye was sent off for punching Keane after a clash between the two in the first half. But despite being down to 10 men by the 14th minute, David Moyes’ side secured a famous victory, ending United’s unbeaten run in shocking fashion. In doing so, Everton became the first team in history to win a Premier League game here, losing just one man.
It was all thanks to Keenan Dewsbury-Hall’s brilliant first-half strike that spoiled Ruben Amorim’s 12-month anniversary.

If Amorim could have picked one player to extend United’s unbeaten run to six games, it would have been Everton. United had beaten them more times than anyone else in the top flight (42 times). Meanwhile, the Merseyside team arrived in Manchester having won just two games in the Premier League since its inception.
Moyes, on the other hand, had never won here as an opponent’s manager. If you think about it, when he was United manager we didn’t really win here.
But if he could buck that trend and leave Old Trafford with three points, they would have moved above Liverpool in the table. That must have been a huge encouragement to the Scots. He never imagined how his personal folly would play out.
United are also without Matheus Cunha due to a head injury and had to cancel the Christmas lights lighting at Altrincham last weekend. The result marked a rare start for Joshua Zirkzee, his first in 225 days. It’s the same match that Rory McIlroy won the Masters.
Everton started well, with Lenny Yolo having to use a fluid movement to prevent Iliman Ndiaye’s cross from reaching the waiting Tierno Barry. Ndiaye sent a shot wide of the target as United struggled to get out of their own half.
Then all hell broke out due to Gueye’s moment of madness, reducing his team to 10 men in just 13 minutes. Keane had to wave Gueye off the pitch following a controversial decision by referee Tony Harrington. That didn’t trouble the visitors, however, and they took the lead in the 29th minute with a fine strike from Dewsbury Hall.
Patrick Dorg should have equalized, but his shot went wide when it looked easy to score. Amad Diallo dived into the box but was unable to find the target.
Pickford then made a world-class save to deny Bruno Fernandes’ long-range piledriver. Everton had something to hang on to and looked determined to hold on to their lead. Whatever it is.
Amorim threw it to Mason Mount in hopes of finding some spark. Mount then curled his shot wide, but Pickford denied Brian Mbeumo with another top-class save. And two even better ones to prevent Zirkzee’s header.
This time the visitors showed fighting spirit for a good cause and United became even more desperate. And it was Keane who led Everton’s rearguard action, producing some important blocks and tackles as United pushed forward.
