Jamie Carragher has slammed Mohamed Salah and believes the Liverpool striker should “come out and speak for the team” after the Reds suffered a sixth defeat in their last seven Premier League games. Arne Slott’s side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday, which saw the Reds drop to 11th place, 11 points behind pacesetters Arsenal.
Reflecting on yet another heavy defeat and Liverpool’s woes, Carragher highlighted Salah as the player to deal with the club’s current predicament, with captain Virgil van Dijk replacing him with constant appearances in front of the media in recent weeks. Carragher pointed out that Salah had frequently been public about his contract situation last season, but insisted he had chosen to remain silent while Liverpool endured a difficult period.
Carragher told Sky Sports Monday Night Football: “I don’t know. Nobody knows. Managers look at the players every day and they can’t fix it completely at the moment. We’re talking about a Premier League-winning manager.”
“After the game, I think Virgil van Dijk came out again and talked about what he should do as captain and called Liverpool a mess. I have to say it’s always Van Dijk who comes out even after Liverpool lose.”
“And like I said, the captain should do that, but the other players in the dressing room should also come out and speak on behalf of the club.
“One year ago this weekend, Mo Salah shamelessly came out and talked about his situation, including how the club did not offer him a contract.
“The only time I listen to Salah is when he wins man of the match or when he needs a new contract.
“I’d like to see Salah come out as one of the leaders, a Liverpool legend and represent the team. He shouldn’t always be the captain.”
Despite being a key player for Liverpool, Salah has only managed four goals and two assists in 12 Premier League games this season.
This is in contrast to his excellent performance in 2024/25, when he directly contributed to 47 goals for the entire season.
