Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola has apologized after he was filmed angrily confronting a cameraman on the pitch at St James’ Park after Newcastle’s 2-1 win on Saturday.
Manager Josep Guardiola has admitted he feels “embarrassed” and “embarrassed” after angrily confronting a cameraman following Manchester City’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle. Guardiola was in a heated conversation with Newcastle players Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton, referee Sam Ballot and, bizarrely, cameramen at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Manchester City manager was left frustrated after Harvey Barnes’ brace gave Newcastle three points. Barnes’ second goal was controversial, with City believing Gianluigi Donnarumma had been fouled in the build-up, but the goal was cleared after a lengthy VAR delay.
After the match, Guardiola was seen admonishing Guimarães and Joelinton. He was also seen taking off the cameraman’s earphones and yelling at him.
“I apologized,” Guardiola said at a press conference on Monday. “It’s embarrassing to watch, it’s embarrassing. I don’t like it. I apologized to the cameraman a second later.

“I am who I am. After playing 1,000 games, I am not a perfect person and I make big mistakes. It doesn’t matter. One thing is for sure: I will protect my team and the club, that’s for sure.”
“The reason is that I want to protect my team and the club, that’s for sure. From my experience, to win the Premier League you have to score 100 or 98 points. Otherwise you won’t win, that’s for sure.”
The City manager also tried to downplay his interactions with Guimarães. Guardiola said: “We have known Bruno for many years. We always talk after every game, even at the Etihad, in the tunnel and everywhere.”
“I don’t know what happened. Our paths cross all the time, but I always have a good relationship with him. I love it. I’m an emotional guy, I love to talk, move my hands, arms and everything.”
In Saturday’s post-match interview, Guardiola reiterated that “everything is fine” when asked about the scene on the pitch. However, he was clearly upset at Ballot’s decision to allow Barnes’ second goal and the decision by VAR.
But ahead of City’s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, he has refused to play any more games against Newcastle. “The referee was involved in the 95th minute, the 98th minute. Why, he was involved,” the City manager said.
