Josep Guardiola had an awkward collision with Newcastle players Joelinton and Bruno Guimarães on the pitch after Manchester City lost 2-1 at St James’ Park.
Josep Guardiola appeared to be on the battlefield after Manchester City lost 2-1 to Newcastle. Two second-half goals from Harvey Barnes ensured the home side secured the three points after an eventful encounter at St James’ Park, with the game continuing after the final whistle.
Barnes put the Magpies ahead with a precise finish from the edge of the box and Ruben Dias’ deflected shot equalized for City five minutes later. Gianluigi Donnarumma led City into the match but was powerless to stop Barnes’ winner from close range.
The winning goal was ruled offside, favoring Newcastle, so it took a long time for VAR to confirm it, and it was determined that Diaz was onside and played Bruno Guimarães with Nick Waltemaide’s header. City protested to referee Sam Ballot, claiming there had been a foul on Donnarumma, but after a lengthy check the goal was allowed.
Guardiola’s frustration at dropping points spilled over after the final whistle, although Arsenal were able to capitalize on that against Tottenham on Sunday. The City manager shook hands with Eddie Howe before taking to the pitch and clashing with Joelinton and Guimarães, who had to be removed by team-mates and coaching staff.

The City manager had a long and intense conversation with the Newcastle captain, but it didn’t seem friendly. He also approached Mr Barot and appeared to lash out at the photographer.
Asked by Sky Sports what he had said to Guimarães, Guardiola refused to be portrayed, saying: “I told him how good he is and asked him about the situation with Gijo, what happened and the previous situation. Everything is fine.”
When I asked Barot what he said, he replied: “No, nothing, nothing. Everything is fine… everything is fine. That’s the way it is…”
Guardiola elaborated on his general dissatisfaction that Donnarumma may have been fouled for Barnes’ crucial second goal. “It happened against Bournemouth, it happened again… Gigio saw the move and I didn’t,” he said.
“But I didn’t see it because I rely so much on the players. I didn’t see it. Otherwise, if he wasn’t impressed. But VAR and the referee made opposite decisions in the first half and in the second half. So that’s the way it is. We’re used to it…”
The defeat, which came after City’s impressive 3-0 win over Liverpool before the international break, left them third in the Premier League, four points behind Arsenal, who could reach seven points if they beat Spurs in Sunday’s derby.
