Matheus Cunha has been injured during Manchester United training. The Brazilian attacker had just returned from international duty to link up with Ruben Amorim and team-mates ahead of Monday night’s clash with Everton at Old Trafford.
However, it was revealed that Cunha had an accident at the practice range. The 26-year-old was due to light up the Christmas lights in Altrincham on Saturday night, but Visit Altrincham announced that he would no longer be attending due to “medical reasons”. “Unfortunately, Mateus Cunha was involved in an accident during training today and due to health reasons he will not be able to attend Altrincham’s Christmas lights lighting ceremony tonight,” the organization wrote on Instagram.
The club has not yet released an official statement. The development comes as the majority of Manchester United’s squad returned to Carrington this week after a two-week international break for the final World Cup qualifiers.
However, several key players remain sidelined, including Benjamin Sesco, Harry Maguire and Koby Mainu, all with various injuries. The news comes as United look to improve their standing in the Premier League after welcoming back a resurgent Toffees side under the guidance of David Moyes on Monday.
The Red Devils come into this game on an impressive five-game unbeaten run, with wins over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion FC, and draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham. They currently sit 10th in the Premier League after 11 games, just eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Despite this, Amorim faces a number of injured players ahead of Monday night’s clash with Everton. Sesco suffered a knee problem during United’s game against Spurs before the international break and was sidelined until December.
Maguire also missed the game with a hamstring problem and Amorim admitted he was “not ready” for the next game. Mainu missed the entire game against the Red Devils and Spurs due to a knock, but could feature at Monday’s Theater of Dreams depending on his progress.
Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez finally made his long-awaited return to the Premier League against the Toffees. The Argentine defender injured his anterior cruciate ligament in February and has been sidelined for most of 2025, but reports suggest he is nearing full match fitness.
The 27-year-old returned to full training ahead of the international break, but manager Amorim decided not to play immediately. Although he was not called up for his country’s national team, Martinez joined Argentina for training and continued his journey towards full fitness during the holidays.
Regarding the possibility of him appearing on Monday night, Amorim said: “We are getting close to having Richa play,” a comment that will be welcomed by United fans around the world.
