Liverpool manager Arne Slott is pointing the finger of blame at himself after their side suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest. The Merseyside Giants had played one game more than the Gunners and finished the afternoon eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, remaining second through the match.
Liverpool fell behind just after the 30th minute when Murillo fired the ball past home goalkeeper Alisson from a corner.
Igor Jesus thought he had doubled the away team’s advantage before the break when he smashed the ball into the back of the goal. However, the shot was ruled out by VAR as it was determined that the ball had been handled on the way to the goal.
Sean Dyche’s side eventually made it 2-0 just after the interval as Nicolo Savona scored from 10 yards. Morgan Gibbs-White then scored a late third goal to round out Forest’s victory.
Liverpool lost just four times all last season, but have now lost six of their 12 Premier League games this season.
And after the final whistle at Anfield, Slott explained: “No matter how we play, if we lose 3-0 at home…We had a very good performance today, but losing 3-0 at home is not our standard.
“We’re all very disappointed, but we also know that the Champions League is coming up in a few days.
“I think in the first 30 minutes the players did exactly what we wanted them to do, played with energy and created enough chances to score.
“Then we conceded a set-piece, which completely changed the flow and the game. After that we had a really hard time finding chances, but we found them in the first 30 minutes.”
“We tried some changes and adjustments, but it just didn’t work out the way we wanted.”
The former Feyenoord manager then claimed responsibility for the defeat, saying, “It’s very disappointing. When things go well and when they don’t, it’s always my responsibility.”
He added: “As you can see, after we lost 1-0, we are struggling – struggling in the sense of not creating too many chances. We are trying to motivate them and give them the information they need to get a good start in the second half, but right after the start we conceded 2-0.”
“This was another big blow for us and a big confidence booster for them. The players kept trying and I can’t blame them, but it was very difficult for us to find openings. And when we found openings, they blocked all our shots.”
