Manchester United star Casemiro is enjoying a late career resurgence at Old Trafford despite scathing comments from Jamie Carragher that threatened to retire.
Just 18 months after Jamie Carragher announced his retirement, veteran Manchester United star Casemiro has been hailed as a “perfect player” by his Premier League rivals.
The Brazilian has endured a rollercoaster ride at Old Trafford since his £60m move from Real Madrid. Although he performed well in his debut season, he struggled in subsequent seasons, with reports at the time suggesting the Red Devils were keen to cut their losses. Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher suggested he should start considering retirement with his infamous “leave football before it gives up on me” comment.
Despite appearing to be at the end of his career, Casemiro appears to be back to his best this season. The 33-year-old has been a consistent performer under manager Ruben Amorim and has already scored three goals this season. And he has now won praise from his compatriot and Newcastle star Bruno Guimarães. During his international assignment, he said: “If you look at his experience, his titles…he’s the perfect player.

“His career speaks for itself. In 2020, in one of my first interviews with the national team, when I arrived, they asked if I was inspired by anyone in the midfield, so I said his name, Casemiro.”
“He is also a local idol, especially for all his achievements at Real Madrid, winning the Champions League five times. Casemiro, the man everyone talks about playing in Brazil’s midfield, is the man we have to emulate.”
“So I think that’s what it’s all about. He’s a leader. It’s definitely a more comfortable position for me to play there as a number eight, and it’s the position I play at Newcastle as well. I think it’s a perfect match and things are starting to fall into place.”

Casemiro’s form and Guimarães’ comments certainly saw Liverpool icon Carragher weighing in on his words. Speaking in May 2024, he said: “I’m nowhere near the level that that guy played for Brazil and Real Madrid and won the Champions League.”
“But there’s one thing I always remember when I retire. As a footballer, there’s a quote I always remember: ‘Leave football before it leaves you.'”
“Football left him at this top level. He needs to end this level of football and move on.”
Casemiro and United return to action on Monday night when they host Everton at Old Trafford. Amorim’s team currently sit seventh in the Premier League with a five-game unbeaten run.
