Alan Shearer believes Liverpool should carefully consider signing Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth as several players struggle to make the step up to big clubs.
Manager Alan Shearer has urged Liverpool to think twice before pursuing Antoine Semenyo, who has a release clause in his contract with Bournemouth, which takes effect in January.
While many top stars leave for pastures new, the Ghanaian winger has chosen to remain with the Cherries over the summer. Semenyo has been a mainstay for Bournemouth this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in his first 11 games, further increasing interest in his role.
Two of those goals came in the opening game at Liverpool, with Bournemouth at one point leveling the scores. Semenyo ran down the pitch and slotted past Alisson to score.
There are also rumors that he could take on a new challenge in the new year with teams such as Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham. But Shearer insists those eyeing Semenyo’s signing need to consider the environment he will be in, claiming he was at a “small” club by comparison.
Liverpool have seen such danger and Shearer referred to the struggles experienced by Milos Kerkes, who had a very impressive performance for Bournemouth last season. He moved to Anfield for £40 million but struggled, being in and out of the starting XI.

The Premier League great told Betfair: “Antoine Semenho has been linked with a move to Anfield, but we don’t know what Liverpool’s plans are for next season, but there will be a huge list of Premier League clubs who have already made inquiries and would like to have him in their squad because of his abilities.”
“It’s fine to play well for Bournemouth, which is a great football club, as we’ve seen with Kerkes, but compared to a club like Liverpool they’re small in terms of size. That’s probably true of most players. These clubs invest a lot of money in their players, so they’ll already know everything they need to know about them.”
Liverpool invested heavily in their forward line over the summer, bringing in Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. But things didn’t work out for them and Mohamed Salah’s drastic decline in form has led to talk of life outside of Egypt.
The Bournemouth ace recently claimed he is trying to keep noise at bay regarding his future. He said: “I don’t think about it too much. I try to stay present as long as I can. They always watch the news, and I watch it too. It’s not that I don’t care, but I try to stay focused.”
Bristol City, who sold Semenyo to Cherries in January 2023 for around £10m, will pay 20% of the profit they make on the winger.
