In a surprising turn of events, former Premier League champion Christian Fuchs has been appointed as the new manager of League Two club Newport County. The former Leicester City player has signed a long-term contract with Rodney Parade. Newport chairman Hugh Jenkins explained the decision: “We see Christian as someone who will take our club forward. We believe he matches our ambitions and the goals of Newport County FC.”
“We now feel we can look forward with great optimism. We want to improve on our current situation in League Two and take things from there. Christian is ambitious and wants to manage in the Premier League one day, and we believe he shares our strong belief that Newport County could end up being there.”
Fuchs faces a difficult task in Newport. The Welsh side currently sit bottom of the Football League, having won just three of their first 16 games.
David Hughes, who was appointed as the club’s manager in the summer, was sacked last week following the latest defeat. Fuchs will make his managerial debut with Newport this weekend against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park.
Fuchs, 39, enjoyed a successful career in Germany before moving to Leicester City in 2015. He played a key role in Leicester’s unexpected Premier League victory in his first season.
The former Austrian international also helped Leicester win the FA Cup in 2020/21 under manager Brendan Rodgers before moving to MLS side Charlotte FC.
Fuchs quit his job at the club after one season and turned to coaching, joining former Aston Villa and Leicester manager Dean Smith’s backroom staff in the United States.
