Manchester United’s summer transfer window has been a success, but as January approaches, the Red Devils are aware there are still areas in the squad that need reinforcements. Despite the additions of Benjamin Sesco, Matheus Cunha and Brian Mbeumo, United’s attack still looks lacking, something highlighted by Sesco’s injury.
With Sesco sidelined for the upcoming games, United look likely to use Cunha as a false nine, with Mbeumo and either Mason Mount or Amad providing support. But with Mbeumo and Amad leaving for the African Cup of Nations, United’s options suddenly look slim.
After the draw with Tottenham, manager Ruben Amorim hinted that Sesco could be on the January market, especially if his injury is serious.
Even if Sesco is able to fit in for all of United’s games, it should be clear that Amorim needs another attacking reinforcement. Fortunately, they have been given the green light to replicate the strategy United used in the summer.
United’s targeted attackers can, in the words of Jason Wilcox, “plug in and play”. Mbeumo in particular seems to have adapted well to his new surroundings and continues to find the back of the goal.
There are certainly benefits to signing a player with Premier League experience, so United should keep an eye on potential moves from other top clubs. According to The Athletic, Bournemouth’s top scorer Antoine Semenyo will have a release clause of just £65m in January.
United will need to move quickly to trigger this deadline, as it is reported to be due to expire in early January. But what would hold United back if they wanted to move?
Semenyo is a proven goalscorer at this level, having scored six goals in 11 games for Bournemouth so far this season.
Although he has been used as a winger this season, he could also provide competition as a centre-forward with Sesco at the top of the pitch. The only hurdle is whether United have the funds to trigger the release clause.
Joshua Zirkzee is a likely candidate if United let him go before the takeover.
Furthermore, it’s hard to imagine a situation where Zirkzee gets playing time ahead of Sesco or any of United’s other attacking players. The striker is rumored to be planning to submit a transfer request in January, and a sale could facilitate a move for Semenyo if the funds are raised.
This is a hugely meaningful signing for United, but other teams will also be competing to sign him. The Red Devils will need to act quickly as Liverpool and Tottenham are also thought to be interested in him.
