Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s next port of call will be to strengthen his side at Old Trafford, spending £200m in attack and reinforcing the midfield area that established him as the new No. 1 over the summer.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim plans to strengthen his midfield in January to boost the club’s Champions League hopes.

United are unbeaten in five Premier League games, their best run since Amorim took over 12 months ago, and there is genuine belief at Old Trafford that they can return to the top table of European football next season. They are therefore poised to build on what club leaders believe has been a very strong summer transfer window into the new year.

Having spent £200m rebuilding the club’s struggling attack and bringing in a new No. 1 in Senne Lamence, United’s next task is to further improve their midfield status. Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes have emerged as Amorim’s preferred options, but the Brazilian’s long-term future remains in doubt, with speculation that Uruguayan international Manuel Ugarte could be sold to raise funds.

There are also doubts over Koby Mainu’s future, with Amorim unsure of his best role, with the player seeing his World Cup hopes dwindled due to a lack of playing time.

Nottingham Forest’s England midfielder Elliott Anderson is liked by United, but the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are also eyeing a player whose reputation is quickly rising, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleva a long-term target. However, both could cost over £100m.

However, as first reported in Portugal, Wolves’ Joao Gomez has been floated as a replacement. The Brazil international, previously hailed as “incredible” by United No. 10 Matheus Cunha (his Selecao team-mate and team-mate at Molineux), has been widely watched by United bosses over the past 18 months and could be snapped up for far less than the aforementioned £100m duo. The £44m price tag has been debated overseas.

However, a deal at that price may have to wait until the summer. Wolves are languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, with no wins so far this season and only two points. New manager Rob Edwards has been appointed and the club has vowed to do everything in their power to remain in the top flight.

It also includes something resembling a gentleman’s agreement with the new head coach not to sell any of the club’s most valuable assets in January to maximize their chances of remaining in the Premier League. And that means keeping the former Flamengo star.

Of course, that could change if United make an offer significantly higher than Wolves’ valuation for Gomez. But that number needs to be much higher than the price to be discussed.

For his part, Gomez has his sights set on next summer’s World Cup with Brazil and knows he needs to play regularly in the Premier League to have the best chance of breaking into Carlo Ancelotti’s side. He got that at Wolves, but he might not have gotten it in Manchester initially. However, a move to United may not yet materialize in the summer if they have other options.
