The Premier League could face legal action from three players’ agents who have banded together to express their anger over the proposed salary cap ahead of a vote.

Three major football agencies have told the Premier League they will take legal action if the league chooses to introduce a salary cap.

Top-flight clubs will vote on Friday whether to introduce “anchors” from next season, which means any team can only spend five times the prize money and broadcast revenue paid to clubs that finish bottom. The ultimate goal is to create a more level playing field.

Prominent agency firms CAA Stella, CAA Base and Wasserman have decided to join forces and have briefed Premier League leaders on their plans in the event of a no vote.

This comes after the PFA threatened legal action ahead of a major shareholder meeting, the Daily Mail reported. The three companies believe that this move violates competition law and that legal action is a realistic option. The agency’s names include Jack Grealish, Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Curtis Jones and John Stones.

Not all clubs have agreed to the plan, including both Manchester clubs. Lower-ranked teams are likely to put their own ambitions first, and clubs with less financial resources may ultimately benefit from the introduction of a cap.

If the vote passes, there will be a spending cap limiting the amount each club can spend to £550m. The two Manchester clubs believe the cap will force talent to leave the Premier League and head to other countries where they can earn more money.

When the club vote was first held last year, Arsenal were among 16 clubs who voted in favor. 14 clubs need to support this change for it to take effect. The PFA is due to meet captains from all 20 top-flight teams this week, but some believe the game is on the brink of civil war.

PFA CEO Maheta Molango said last week: “The reality is that you cannot artificially limit a person’s ability to make a living because it will not withstand a legal challenge.”

The Championship is also considering adopting a similar system, but given that some clubs have just dropped out of the top flight and others are used to Ligue 1 incomes, similar disagreements could arise.

One club executive explained: “This destroys our status as the best league in the world and all the money it brings in. We feel like we are sleepwalking into disaster.”
