Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has been tipped as the ideal mentor for new signing Benjamin Sesco. The Red Devils strengthened their attacking options over the summer with the signings of proven Premier League talents Brian Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. They also forayed into the European market to secure the services of former RB Leipzig forward Sesco, beating out competition from Newcastle.
So far this season, the Slovenian international has played 12 games in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist. However, Sesco suffered a problem in the last game before the international break, a 2-2 draw away to Tottenham, coming on midway through the second half but was immediately sent off with a suspected knee injury.
As a result, the 22-year-old did not take part in the national team and spent his vacation recuperating. Reports this week suggest the striker is still weeks away from his return and is likely to miss some key games after the international break.
As the January transfer window approaches, rumors surrounding potential signings naturally intensify. One name loosely linked with a move to Old Trafford is former striker Welbeck, and former Liverpool and Everton star Don Hutchison believes the Brighton forward would be the perfect guide for Sesco as he adapts to England’s top flight.
“So it would be a great fit,” Hutchison told SportCasting. “Danny Welbeck is one of those players who if he goes back to Man United he will be like what Jonny Evans was when he came back, so signing him would be great.
“When Jonny Evans went back there a few years ago, he was happy to be a kind of mentor within the dressing room, he was happy to be a mentor to the players that were playing.
“He was happy to play his role when he needed it. He was happy to be on the bench. I think it’s a really good fit for Danny Welbeck to go to Man United in that he can still play, he can still score goals and he’s still really fit.”
“But he will still have the attitude that returning to Man United would be a great step forward knowing he would be coaching players like Sesco. I think it would be the perfect move.”
Welbeck developed through United’s youth ranks, making over 140 first-team appearances before moving to Arsenal in 2014.
After a stint at Watford, he joined Brighton in 2020 and has enjoyed something of a resurgence this season, scoring six goals in 11 Premier League games so far.
It is not the first time the 34-year-old has been linked with a dramatic comeback at Old Trafford, with speculation also emerging around this time last year.
However, there is currently no firm suggestion that United are planning to make an approach for the striker.
