Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate has expressed frustration at speculation surrounding his future, saying he is “in a bind” with fans who “don’t know everything”. The French defender is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and there are rumors of an extension, while there are also rumors of a move to Real Madrid, a path previously taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Konate is currently Virgil van Dijk’s preferred defensive partner, so potentially losing another key player on a free transfer would be a blow for Liverpool. He joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021 and has been a regular in the team ever since. Last season, Liverpool had to overcome persistent speculation about the futures of Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk, with the latter two eventually signing new contracts.
All eyes are now on Konate, with the 26-year-old claiming that some media reports about his next move are inaccurate and are causing unnecessary confusion.
“It’s difficult. I can’t say everything because so much has already been said in the media,” the Liverpool star said in an interview with TF1 ahead of France’s victory over Azerbaijan, which saw Les Bleus fight back and win an early goal.
The player also claimed that filtered reporting would ultimately not sit well with Liverpool fans who don’t know the full story. “Some of the stuff I read was like, oh, la la,” he said.
“That puts me in a bind with Liverpool fans and they don’t even know everything.”
Real Madrid have become masters of exploiting the free transfer market. Just over 12 months ago, they signed Kylian Mbappé without paying a dime when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.
It has been widely documented that they are chasing Alexander-Arnold, and they previously snapped up Antonio Rudiger following his departure from Chelsea.
Liverpool targeted Marc Guehy during the summer and pursued the Crystal Palace star right up until his death on deadline day. His contract expires next summer, and the Eagles ultimately backed out of sale talks.
The Reds brought in Giovanni Leoni from Parma, but he suffered an early setback and was sidelined for the entire season.
