Ian Wright has defended Jude Bellingham and slammed media criticism after the Real Madrid star was accused of being furious at being substituted.
Ian Wright has insisted the media “need to pick up on this kind of beef” with Jude Bellingham after he was criticized for his reaction to the player’s substitute appearance against England on Sunday night.
The Real Madrid star has returned to the national team after being overlooked in several training camps but playing a big part in the win against Albania. Manager Thomas Tuchel opted to bring him on with six minutes left and bring on Morgan Rodgers.
After the match, Tuchel was asked about Bellingham’s reaction to the withdrawal, after he was said to have walked off the pitch angrily with his arms raised. His celebratory photo contradicts that theory, and Wright defended himself, insisting the noise was purely to spice up the story leading up to this summer’s World Cup.
Arsenal icon Bellingham has dismissed recent criticism and scorn as he prepares to return to Tuchel’s England, claiming critics “hate that they can’t understand him”.
Wright said on social media: “They need to develop this kind of beef because there’s nothing else to talk about until the World Cup and this will continue until the World Cup. They hate that they can’t get to him. They hate that they can’t negatively impact his club career like they’ve done for so many people. He’s a privileged young man with so much talent and so much love.”

Bellingham has proven to be somewhat at odds with England, with his ego and big personality attracting criticism. In the summer, he was called out by the England manager for “obnoxious” behavior, but Tuchel later retracted his comments. But the Germans made it clear that the group was prioritized over the individual.
England have been criticized in the past for forcing their top players to play in the same team, without the possibility of eliminating big names in favor of a system. Tuchel has already said Bellingham, Harry Kane and Phil Foden cannot play together in the same eleven.
Given Bellingham’s reaction in Albania, Tuchel said he would reconsider how his players perceived the decision to send him off.
He said: “We have to review it. I understand he is not happy. We don’t want to get bigger than we are at the moment. My words are correct. We value standards, levels and commitment to each other and we respect each other. We are not going to change or make decisions just because someone waves their arm.”
