Alexander Isak’s season so far has been interrupted due to injury and fitness concerns after his £125m move to Liverpool.
Alexander Isak has expressed disappointment at having his season interrupted due to injury following his record-breaking £125m move to Liverpool. The forward forced a move from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day, but things haven’t gone to plan.
The Sweden international spent much of the summer training alone and did not feature for the Magpies in pre-season or the start of the Premier League season. So, after moving to Anfield in early September, he had to play catch-up.
Isak had a slow start at Liverpool, scoring just once in his first eight games at the club. But his progress was halted by a groin injury sustained during Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last month, when he was forced off at half-time.

He then missed Liverpool’s next four games and was on the bench for the Reds’ 3-0 loss to Man City before the international break.
The 26-year-old returned from injury on Saturday night to represent Sweden in a World Cup qualifier. Despite coming on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, he was unable to save his country from losing 4-1 away to Switzerland and dropping them to the bottom of their qualifying group.
After the defeat, Isak gave an update on his return from injury and is keen to get back into form for both club and country.
“It was about 30 minutes. I felt okay,” he told Sportbladet. “I felt like my body reacted well after the match.
“Hopefully I can play properly in the next game (Tuesday against Slovenia). It’s always frustrating when you get injured, whether it’s one game or more. It’s always the worst thing for the player himself.”
“I wasn’t in the best condition, but when I’m on the field I don’t make excuses for myself. I always want to play my game and perform.
“But yes, it’s tough being away and not being able to help and contribute. Now that I’m back I’m positive. Nothing in football is easy. But with experience you learn to deal with things.”
“That’s what injuries are like. You learn how to deal with them and get back on track.”
Meanwhile, Sweden coach Graham Potter revealed in the post-match press conference that he intends to extend Isak’s playing time against Slovenia after his return from injury.
“The plan was for Isaac to play 30 minutes,” he said. “It wasn’t easy to get into position for the game.
“Hopefully we’ll see more of him on Tuesday. The plan is for him to play more against Slovenia.”
