The real reason Anfield won’t host Euro 2028 matches as Liverpool’s stadium is banned by UEFA rules

Euro 2028 will be jointly hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with Liverpool’s Anfield not being among the venues announced so far.

The countdown to Euro 2028 has begun, with dates, kick-off times, stadiums and schedule all announced.

Back in October 2023, it was confirmed that Great Britain and Ireland had bid to host Euro 2028, and now further details have been revealed, with the tournament set to start in Cardiff on June 9th. The final is scheduled to be held a month later on July 9th at Wembley.

There are nine venues including Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, Glasgow’s Hampden Park and Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Manchester City’s Etihad, Villa Park, St James’s Park and Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium are also on the list.

In England’s 1966 World Cup and 1996 Euros, the Three Lions played all their home games at Wembley, but this time they could end up playing in Manchester and Newcastle, or possibly Hill Dickinson, depending on progress.

But even as full details of the tournament were released, there was one iconic stadium that remained conspicuously absent. It’s Anfield.

Liverpool will be the host city, but the club’s iconic stadium was not included in the FA list submitted to UEFA. Somewhat surprising considering that the site has undergone extensive redevelopment in recent years, increasing its capacity to over 61,000 people.

However, this omission was not purely by choice, nor was it impossible because Hill Dickinson Stadium, which seats 52,769, was chosen.

Rather, the reason it was ruled out is the same problem that previously prevented the holding of Champions League and Europa League finals: the dimensions of the playing surface.

UEFA regulations state that “the playing field must have standard dimensions of 105 meters x 68 meters”.

Anfield’s pitch is only 101 meters long, making it an unsuitable venue.

Anfield was last used in a major competition when England hosted Euro 1996, hosting Group C matches involving Italy, Russia and the Czech Republic, as well as the quarter-finals between France and the Netherlands.

But once Euro 2028 takes place, it will remain visible from the outside.
