Middlesbrough have urged supporters to unite after confirming Rob Edwards has resigned and agreed a contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers. The former Wolves player and coach has returned to the Premier League club less than five months after taking charge at Boro.

Edwards was dropped from last weekend’s home match against Birmingham City after the club also canceled their pre-match press conference. Hours before kick-off, Middlesbrough announced that they had reluctantly given their head coach permission to speak to Wolves.

In the absence of assistant coach Adi Viveash, he led the team to a 2-1 victory at Riverside Stadium. The club has now confirmed that he will continue to oversee team operations on an interim basis.

An official statement read: “Middlesbrough FC can confirm that Rob Edwards has officially resigned from his position as head coach after agreeing a contract with Wolves. Rob had signed a three-year contract with us over the summer, but after he made clear his desire to join Wolves, we reluctantly agreed a pay scale for himself and one of his first-team coaches, Harry Watling.”

“On Saturday at Riverside, players, staff and supporters came together and we could feel the sense of unity that is at the core of the club. I would like to thank everyone involved.”

“Adi Viveash took charge of team affairs last Saturday and will continue to do so during the interim period. Let’s stay together. UTB.”

The Wolves also released a statement. “Rob Edwards is Wolves’ new head coach, signing a three-and-a-half year contract to begin his fourth spell at the club.”

Edwards himself has not commented publicly on the appointment. However, two executives at the club, executive chairman Geoff See and director of player recruitment and development Matt Jackson, have voiced their support.

“I know Rob very well and have watched him develop in various jobs. He’s a very good guy, he knows the club, the city, the fans very well and he’s very talented. He showed tactical awareness when he was a youth coach here, but since he got the first-team job he’s started to develop his identity, character and leadership.”

“We need to revamp the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy, bringing his own identity and ideas, and we can build on that. We are in a new chapter for the club and Rob will be key to that.”

Jackson added: “Rob and his staff have proven so far to be very good at changing the culture, giving players confidence right away and building the foundations for a really positive future. He loves making changes to the team on the grass and embracing tactics for different situations.”

“The energy that he brings off the field, we have to bring it onto the pitch. We have to be realistic about where we are and we definitely have to take responsibility. We now need to instill that belief in our players quickly and think that Rob will be a great cultural addition to the whole football club.”
