Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed his return to the sidelines with a playful video announcement revealing his latest venture. The German stepped down as Liverpool’s head coach in the summer of 2024, but has consistently maintained since then that he has no desire to return to management.
The 58-year-old returned to football in January 2025, taking up a consultancy role as head of global football for Red Bull Group. It was also revealed last month that he had taken up a new role at the German Football League (DFL), becoming part of an expert committee focused on strengthening the country’s football.
However, Klopp has now revealed his future role, confirming that he will serve as a commentator on Magenta TV for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
In a video released on social media on Friday morning, the former Liverpool manager playfully teased his return to management before revealing the nature of his new position.
“Many of you know better than usual,” he said in a voiceover during footage of him strolling around the stadium. “But I couldn’t really imagine it myself.
“Going back to the sideline? I haven’t missed anything. This is what I always thought. But now it’s starting to tingle again.”
“The grass under my feet. The heat of the stadium. And I want to be close again.”
Speaking directly to the camera afterwards, Klopp once again denied speculation that he would return as manager. “Oh? No, not as a manager,” he clarified.
“I will be a pundit for Magenta TV at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
Klopp was then seen making a video call to German TV presenter and journalist Johannes B. Kellner.
“Hello, Johannes,” he began. “I’m in! See you in Mexico on June 11th! That’s a cool word. No one could possibly say it except Indiana Jones.”
Klopp also hinted at his return in the caption accompanying the video, writing: “The grass underfoot, the atmosphere in the stadium, so close! I’m looking forward to being back on the sideline!”
