Bruno Fernandes explains absence from Portugal squad due to Manchester United injury concerns | Soccer | Sports

Bruno Fernandes was conspicuously omitted from Portugal’s squad for Thursday night’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Ireland. Concerns began to circulate on social media that the Manchester United captain could be injured, but his absence is actually due to suspension.

In last month’s 2-2 draw with Hungary, the midfielder collected enough warnings to warrant a suspension and was therefore unavailable for the game. Fernandes will no doubt be frustrated at not being able to contribute to Portugal’s chances of qualifying for next summer’s competition.

However, his absence could benefit both Fernandes and United, especially after Portuguese media expressed concerns about him last month. Lena Shenka reported signs of “physical fatigue.”

On the other hand, A. Bora gave him a rating of 6/10, noting that his influence on the match was limited, saying: “He hit the post once in the second half, but that was probably the only time he was able to find space in the central aisle. For this reason, he often appeared close to the line, especially on the left, but could not gain any influence.”

There may be concerns about his physical condition given his long playing time, but there is no real worry about him suffering a muscular injury. His absence from tonight’s game has been expected for some time.

Manager Ruben Amorim’s deployment of Fernandes in a midfield role was crucial to Manchester United’s ball progression and movement across the pitch. This trend is starting to change, even though his involvement in goals in deeper positions has decreased.

Fernandes has provided assists in three of United’s last four games, against Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool. He also played a key role in Brian Mbeumo’s fourth goal against Brighton, with the Cameroonian scoring the second goal in a 4-2 win.

At Anfield, Harry Maguire scored from Fernandes’ superb first-time cross, while against Forest and Spurs respectively Casemiro and Matthijs de Ligt scored from Fernandes corners.

Fernandes missed the trip to Ireland but will be available for Portugal’s match against Armenia in a few days’ time as they hope to maintain their form against Portugal.

The international match will take place eight days before United’s next game, against Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night, November 24th. Matches against Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Wolves and Bournemouth follow shortly after.

Fernandes’ attacking ability will no doubt be called into question during the festival, as Amorim’s side face Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Wolves and Leeds United, all of whom will be without Amad and Mbeumo due to AFCON obligations.
