The Professional Footballers’ Association took a standstill after it was revealed that Premier League clubs were set to vote for or against particularly controversial new financial rules.

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has issued a warning to the Premier League.

The Professional Footballers’ Association is reportedly threatening to sue the Premier League if a new ‘salary cap’ is introduced. Later this month, England’s top clubs will vote on “top-to-bottom anchoring” that would limit the amount teams can spend.

The amount in question is five times the amount paid to the team that finished in last place in “soccer team expenses,” which includes player and coach wages, depreciation expenses, agent fees, etc. In an official statement to the Daily Mail, a PFA spokesperson warned against voting in favor of this.

“While we have made it clear to the Premier League that we oppose this, the Premier League themselves are aware that there are clubs within their own country who may legally challenge this action, even before the PFA does so.”

“In the end, only the lawyers will win. We want to talk about football, we don’t want to talk about legislation. There are ways to work on measures around financial sustainability, but this cannot be imposed unilaterally. There are mechanisms (of consultation) that need to be negotiated and that need to be respected.”

In response to the above claims, in an official statement to Mirror Sport, a Premier League spokesperson said: “We disagree with the PFA’s views on the proposed financial rules and the extensive consultation process we have undertaken with clubs and other stakeholders.

“The PFA has had numerous opportunities since March 2024 to provide feedback and shape the proposals and the principles underlying them. Where the League has received feedback on the new financial system from stakeholders, including the PFA, we have carefully considered it and incorporated it, where appropriate, into the development of the draft rules.”

“It is the league’s aim to maintain the balance between the values and competition of the Premier League and to ensure that clubs operate in a financially sustainable manner. We are working with clubs and they will continue to assess the proposals. They will have the opportunity to vote later this month.”

PFA chief executive Maheta Molango insisted the union “cannot withstand any legal challenge”. Speaking on BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday morning, he said: “There is a tendency in football to think that we are above the law, but football is not above the law and unfortunately the reality is that you cannot artificially limit someone’s ability to earn a living.”

“The league knows that even before the PFA makes a decision, there will be clubs within their own clubs who will seek to legally challenge the action, and that only their lawyers will ultimately prevail.

“There are ways to agree on fiscal sustainability, but this cannot be imposed unilaterally. This needs to be negotiated with the right people and there are some mechanisms that need to be respected.”

Based on reported figures for the 2023/24 season, the budget for Premier League clubs will be around £550m. If introduced, some teams would be immediately at risk of non-compliance.

It is said that if England’s top-flight players break the rules for a second time, they could be given six deduction points, with one point added for each time they overspend their £6.5 million.

Manchester United and Manchester City are known to have opposed this financial regulation, which will be introduced alongside the new ‘Team Cost Ratio’ regulation. They believe it will “rob” the Premier League of its status as the best division on the planet and prevent the world’s top players from competing.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously expressed concerns about the proposed “anchoring” rules. As quoted by the Daily Mail, United’s co-owner said: “It would hamper the activities of the top clubs in the Premier League.

“And the last thing we want is for the top clubs in the Premier League to not be able to compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG. That would be absurd. Then the Premier League would no longer be the best league in the world.”

The Mirror has contacted the Premier League for comment.
