Chelsea went into the international break with a comfortable 3-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Wolves on Saturday night, but were booed by fans at half-time after a goalless first period before an unlikely scorer came forward to break the deadlock.
Maro Gusto had to sum up his first goal as a senior with one word: “Finally.”
The France international was unlikely to break the deadlock with bottom-of-the-table Wolves after Chelsea were booed at half-time. Gusto, 22, ghosted in at the far post without being chased by any of the Old Gold players, achieving the feat for the first time in 165 career appearances. He celebrated energetically with his delighted and clearly shocked teammates.
The tension in the stadium was high and Chelsea were able to secure an easy victory. On social media, injured centre-back Levi Colwill led a crowd of friends and team-mates and was allowed to joke: “I can’t believe it. Mont Garcon (my son) has scored.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is hopeful that Gusto will develop a taste for scoring, declaring: “(Marc) Cucurella scored six or seven goals last season and I hope Maro will score more this season.”
“Maro came close a lot of times. We like our full-backs to attack and get into the box. Maro is one of our key players because he allows us to be versatile. So we’re very happy with Maro.”
But his main concern is trophies, not goals, although Gusto admits he is “hungry for more”.
Gusto said: “It was a big win. This performance was really important for us before the international break.”
“We are all young players. We have to continue to develop and fight for titles. We are Chelsea and we want to show up to the fans and prove that we can fight.”
“Now we are growing as a team. Last season was great in terms of the title, but we have to compete more this season.”
Chelsea’s next match after the international break will be against Burnley on November 22nd.
