Manchester United defender Harry Amath is set to continue his role at Sheffield Wednesday beyond the January transfer window. The teenager joined the Championship side on loan in September and made a huge impact during his time at Yorkshire. Despite the club’s financial difficulties, Amas has been a consistent performer, not missing a single Championship game since joining Hillsborough, and has played the entirety of his last 10 appearances.

The young defender, who scored his first senior goal in a recent game against Southampton, has quickly adapted to senior football. He signed for Manchester United in August 2023 after spending his early years at Watford. The Red Devils are reportedly satisfied with Amas’ progress during his loan spell and took the decision to extend his stay on Wednesday.

United bosses believe Amath has improved significantly in his first few months at the club.

Manager Henrik Pedersen on Wednesday praised Amas’ contribution, saying the loanee had proven his ability to compete with the best players in the division.

In an interview with the Sheffield Star, Pedersen said of Amath: “The young man who came to Sheffield on Wednesday and the young man who just left the stadium today are two different people.”

“And they’re two different players. His progress has been amazing and for a young player like Harry, he’s come in with a lot of energy, but then the championship always gets knocked out three games in a row.”

“It’s tough but he keeps playing. This week against West Brom, Norwich and Southampton he played against three good teams and showed he can compete with them.”

“He can not only compete, but he can be dominant in some situations. So I think he’s grown a lot as a player.

“What I see is young people who are starting to have great knowledge about who they are as people, who they want to be, and who they don’t want to be.

“He’s starting to take control to be more consistent when he’s feeling down. You see a young player starting to get stronger physically.

“He’s starting to run more, he’s sprinting more, he’s starting to accelerate more, he’s starting to take little breaks during games. He’s starting to get better between games.

“I like him. He’s a good kid, a good player, he loves to learn. We want him here.”
