The Slovenian Football Association has intervened to quell an explosive spat between club and country involving Benjamin Sesko. Earlier this week, Slovenia manager Majaz Kek was furious and demanded that his country be shown the “utmost respect” after claiming he had never been informed by Manchester United of the injured striker’s condition. Keku reportedly threatened to cause a “diplomatic incident” and wanted Sesko to be evaluated by his own medical experts.

Instead, the forward, who picked up a knee problem against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, was assessed by United’s medical team and did not join the Slovenia squad, remaining at Carrington for continued treatment. The injury is not considered to be a serious concern, according to reports, and despite Kek’s accusations, the Slovenian federation has now confirmed it has obtained all the necessary medical records and announced it supports United’s assessment in a bid to calm the dust.

A spokesperson told the Daily Mail: “The medical team of the Slovenian national football team received on Saturday from Manchester United the complete medical documentation regarding Benjamin Sesko’s health status following his injury, including the current clinical profile and the tests carried out.”

“Unfortunately, Benjamin is unable to participate in training at this time due to his injury. Further tests and treatment are scheduled to begin at the club in the coming days, so unfortunately Benjamin will not be able to participate in any national team activities at this time.”

“We wish Benjamin a speedy recovery and a return to the soccer field as soon as possible.”

United believe Slovenia followed all necessary protocols regarding Sesco’s injury before withdrawing their threat of a club-vs-country dispute.

A furious Keku said earlier this week: “With all due respect to a great club like Manchester United, we haven’t officially received anything yet. We haven’t received any papers, we haven’t received any documents.

“We would love to get them. We want our medical team to test them as well. Our doctors are experts in this field. We don’t just have people in this position.”

“I can’t comment. Of course, I have certain information and I’ve been in touch with Beni. Officially I don’t know anything, so I can’t say anything.”

“United have not contacted anyone in camp. Of course I am worried about the player. The only thing that matters to me is his health.”

“We are prepared to do everything to that end and have never sent anyone onto the field if there was any risk.”

Sesco was substituted in the 58th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but only played 30 minutes before being substituted. Matthijs de Ligt’s last-minute equalizing goal ended the match in a tie.

Keku added: “The national team is very special and I expect the utmost respect from everyone.

“Slovenia deserves it, even if there is a strong country like England on the other side and something special like the Premier League.

“After all, it’s been quite a while since England beat Slovenia and that in itself says something about us.”
